factory race parts
« on: December 24, 2013, 07:34:40 PM »
Hey was perusing through my Camaro lit, and saw a pic of a 12 bolt yoke with a pulley for a rear end oil cooler. Just wondering if anyone has this set up on a real car with the rest of the parts?
(Jon have you seen this installed?)

I've seen it but don't remember what car. It's been several years and my memory has unfortunately not improved with age. Lots going on with Christmas, etc, so it might be awhile before I could locate a picture (if I even have one).

well I wasn't sure if anyone had ever posted about it, and thought it would be cool to see what the system looked like back then and how they mounted it. Would the rear end get that hot around the track? or was it just for the 24 hour races?

Well, Parnelli Jones fried the rear axle in his Mustang at Laguna Seca in '69 and I am sure others did the same in other Trans-Am event but then again, others made it through 24 Hour events at Daytona without it. I guess you could look at them as a bit of an insurance policy but sometimes it might still not be enough.

is your avatar of a original trans am racer, or is this a car you may have made to go to the track with?

It is a vintage shot from February '67 taken at the Daytona 300 Trans-Am. It was driven by Johnny Moore and owned by Hugh Heishman at that time and I am the current owner. It is undergoing a restoration and I'm not yet done with it.

Very cool. Did it start off as a 67 Z/28, and then get modified through the years? It must be a task to find a vintage race car that remained in good condition. it seems like a car that turned into a racer early on would get beat on and hacked up a bit more every time it passes to a new owner.

It's the first '67 Z-28 off the production line, built late December '66. It only ran as a Trans-Am race car for a year then was put back on the street.
