Were orignal '69 black consoles painted from the factory or were they left in the natural plastic finish?

I disagree. I have never seen one that wasn't molded in black. They were painted to match for green, red and blue interiors.

'67 consoles were molded in an off-white color.

The original '69 console in my car along with the 1 or 2 used ones I have appear black throughout (at least where the cracks are around the ashtray area).

Due to the cracks in the originals, I recently purchased a reproduction console shell.  It's very accurate from what I can tell.  However, the grain pattern (though accurate) is a little more crisp than the original, which had me wondering if the originals were painted - even the black color version.    Seems if I were to paint the reproduction, it would be spot-on from a grain texture prespective as the paint would soften up some of grain texture.  Also, by painting the console shell, it would be easier to match the console door and ashtray lid black gloss/tone, which again had me wondering if the factory painted the black console shells.

I think there was a reference in the AIM about painting the console and people may be inferring "painting" with all colors instead of other than black.

The original Ivy gold console in my 68 was molded in off-white plastic and painted gold. I had to replace it because it was too cracked up. I replaced it with a black one from a 69 and it was molded in black. I don't think it was painted black also because I had to clean it so I could paint it gold.
