Felpro head gasket
« on: June 26, 2012, 02:33:02 PM »
Can anyone give me a recommendation for a head gasket for my 68 Z motor?  I am out of town and would like to order it to arrive when I get home.  There are too many choices on Summit to choose from.  The one I took off was a Felpro and I just took off the heads to get my rocker arm studs changed to screw in.

I used GM #3830711 on my 327. Its a steel shim type like the original. I think they are still available and pretty cheap.

I've always used the Fel-Pro Perma-torque gaskets with great success.

I read all the posts about the gaskets and thought the steel shim ones had to have fresh deck jobs on heads and block.  Also, there are many pages of Felpro headgaskets for chev.  I'd like something reasonable that doesn't need re-torquing and doesn't take away any of my compression.

Heads;
 I used the .028 Mr. Gasket Part Number 1134 Ultra-Seal Head Gaskets as my pistons averaged .010" to the deck. QUENCH is best between .035" to .044".
How far in the hole are your pistons on average?

No clue, it hasn't been decked and everything is stock 302.

Yes and stock they will still be in the hole by some amount. I thought I had heard before most stock motors had the pistons .005"~.007" in the hole.
I would not select/order a head gasket without taking the measurement, but you could mic your old gasket to see what you had.
My 302 runs well with my set-up and has no pinging at all rpm ranges on pump gas.

I finally got home and the ones I had were 7733's.  I'm going with the Gm 117's.  I'm already using some race gas so no biggie.
