Original Battery Hold Down Clamp
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:29:38 AM »
Many of our cars over the years have had the battery hold down clamp replaced and neither of our Camaro's had originals but our 67 Corvette did and it had been dipped in black paint so I assumed it was factory. Last week at Carlilse I asked a NCRS C2 judge (judges primarily late model C2's) I know if in fact Corvette battery hold down clamps were black and he told me yes. Additionally, I have looked at two 69 survivors and both those clamps had black paint or remnants of black paint. I also have two additional original clamps and both of them have black paint or remnants of. Restored cars I have looked seem to normally have a phosphate battery clamp which they were according to research but I'm thinking they were additionally painted black. Here are my three examples. Sorry, do not have pics of the 69 survivor clamps. Notice the black paint remnants and 'K' stamping on two pieces. So how about it, were those battery hold down clamps black from the factory on our Camaro's? So check your cars and please let me know if you have an orig. clamp and if it seemed to be painted black.

Chick mine is original and looked like the rusty one in your picture but it had black on it in valleys/hook part on the underside. As far as any markings I don't remember any.

I still have the original clamp on my 67 4B LOS survivor (w/dimples) and it has several traces of black paint. It also has the K stamped into the one side like yours.

I would have bet money that others members would have commented by now especially when this is not a very well known fact one way or another. If you see this JohnZ what do you have on your Z and know about what they did back then.
Others please?

Obviously most have deteriorated to a degree, however just about all the orig cars I have certified have some traces of black paint.

I have the original on my 69 Z/28 that I painted and also have the original  one on my 69 "survivor" SS nova that has the rubber based paint on it. I bet they were dipped some how to help with the battery acid.

Update on this supject!
Recently a good friend brought a box of parts and told me to enjoy, wow!
You see, my friends Dad worked for the railroad where new cars came in.
He would find odds & ends along the rail tracks and pick them up.
Among the items in the box were 4 original battery clamps.
They were all painted (dipped) a semi-gloss black. The
clamp seemed like it was phosphated prior to paint and I did find a new stamping.
Before, the only clamp stampings I had found or heard about were 'K' stampings.
But one of the four had a 'C'.

The phosphate coated clamp under the paint.

The 'C' Stamping!

I've got an original battery tray and clamp from a '67 Camaro that was parted out after an accident when there was only 1100 miles on the car. The clamp is black and has the K on it.

One inch in length with a .875 dia. captured washer.

Here's a couple of photos from my 1100 mile '67 Camaro battery clamp and bolt. The threaded portion of the bolt is 1" long.
The washer under the bolt head is not flat but instead is conical and the clamp itself is not flat where the bolt goes through.

I'll say that clamp and washer were crushed by an overzealous mechanic. I've never seen a clamp stamped concave at the hole. If I did not feel like tightening that with a ratchet, I could make quick work with a 3/8" or 1/2" impact with an extension and easily crush the clamp and washer without stripping the pierce nut. Service mechanics grab air tools whenever they can, time is of the essence.

I think you guys are right. I didn't notice that previously. It's just been sitting around on a shelf and I hadn't looked it over well enough.
