Some color photos from the 1971 Riverside Trans-Am courtesy of John Ryals. Thanks for sharing these with us, John.

The Penske transporter and the Javelin with a car cover on it. The championship was in hand prior to Riverside so Donohue
wasn't even there to run the car. Jackie Oliver was the fill-in driver and was told not to damage the car. It was already sold, apparently.

The two Roy Woods Javelins. George Follmer put his car on the pole.

The blue #67 Bob West Mustang and the dark red Mustang of Clay Priola in the Riverside garages prior to the race.

The orange Camaro of Joe Chamberlain, the yellow Camaro of Stan Bennett, the red Mustang of Bill Maier and the Javelin of Buzz Dyer.

Alfie Ruys de Perez's Camaro, Ken Deckman's blue Camaro and the red Camaro of John Silva.

The Robert Hampton '66 Barracuda, the two Wetson's Alfas and the Burton Jackson/Chuck McKay yellow Camaro.

Paul Jett's "Handy Andy" Camaro, the BMW's of Gerry Gregory and Don Pike, and the ex-Penske, ex-Roy Woods Camaro of Dave Dralle.

John Ryals photo

Ed Hinchcliff's blue Mustang, John Ware's orange Camaro and John Putnam's blue & green Camaro.

Lots of people wanting to check out the action in the garage area.

The Vic Elford RWR Javelin on the grid prior to the race with the #4 Jerry Thompson and #3 Tony DeLorenzo (ex-Bud Moore) Mustangs right behind.
In the background is the blue #1 (ex-Jim Hall) Camaro of Mark Waco with Mo Carter's red Camaro behind it.

The blue #67 Mustang of Bob West with the #97 orange Camaro of Paul Jett and the red Dodge Challenger of Dick Brooks visible on the left.

John Ware in the car ready to go. Tony's Jacal is a Mexican restaurant in the San Diego area that was a sponsor of the car.

Joe Chamberlain's #76 Camaro qualified well, was up on the 4th row. That's Frank Search's #36 right behind. Frank was from Northern CA.

Jackie Oliver qualified the Penske Javelin back on the 6th row alongside John Ware's Camaro.

Photos from the start of the race, courtesy of John Ryals. That had to be quite a thrill to be right there as the cars came roaring by.
