original A212CW for a 69 01B
« on: March 31, 2012, 04:51:45 AM »
For a 1969 Z/28, 2nd week of January (01B) what A212CW filter is correct?  JohnZ has posted A212CW photos on this site in the past, but the links do not work any more.

#1) On Yenko.net: http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=359461
This one came in a box dated 11/12/1969

JohnZ has a side view of one from 1967:

It looks like #1 and #2 match, but #3 is very different with the straight wire.

Not the same part# but similar air filter. I thought 69's had the sq. type mesh and embossed part #.
Thought service replacements have both stenciling and changes in wire & configuration.
My examples:

The heavy mesh-

Here is one on ebay for sale that has a box dated past mid 70's! Notice how the sq wire runs different from JohnZ's pic.

Since the dates on the box on the EBay one go up to 1978, I would guess the EBay one is from 1978 or 1979.

I also have never seen any postings where original A212CW's were embossed on the top.  Everything I have seen says that the original A212CW's had white silkscreening starting with "BEST WAY TO PROTECT" on them.

I think the Corvettes were similar and I found something on the "Corvette Restoration Guide, 1968 - 1982" by Richard Prince.

“All 1968 and 1969 Corvettes not equipped with an L88 or ZL1 use an open element air cleaner assembly.  The assembly is comprised of a base, an element, and a lid.

  ……………etc etc.

Original air filter elements have ‘BEST WAY TO PROTECT YOUR ENGINE – REPLACE WITH TYPE A 212 CW’ silk screened in white around the horizontal lip.   Furthermore, original elements, unlike later replacements, have a fine wire screen around the outside.  Most replacements use a noticeably heavier wire.  Earlier cars probably utilize an element with the wire screen in a diagonal pattern.  Later cars probably use an element with the wire screen in a horizontal pattern.  With a horizontal pattern, the wire forms rectangles with the longer measurement running vertical when the element is installed.”

Interesting for sure. The examples I submitted were air cowl plenum filters. The heavier wire one with embossed was a very old filter with the NOS service replacement next to it.

Every time I think something should be simple, it ends up more complicated than I ever thought it would be.  I also think I wrote my initial post in a confusing way.

Maybe a better way to ask is.......which filter wire on a A212CW is correct for a January 1969 Z/28 with no cowl?

Should it look like this late 1969 version?

Or should it look like the 1967 version?

For this sort of question I prefer to rely on vintage road test photos.

Both Hot Rod [1-69] and PHR [4-69] tested the same very early production '69 Z/28. The PHR engine photo clearly shows the soldered diamond mesh version as seen in photo #2. '68 Z/28 tests show the same mesh.

Car Life [8-69] and Road Test [8-69] tested the same yellow/yellow JL-8 Z/28. For the C/L test it had a cross-ram. But it was all OE for Road Test. The photo shows the mesh as in photo #2 but it appears to be oriented 90º from the photo. It is definitely not the diamond mesh. The earliest yellow interior cars were mid-February.

You could probably use either.

THANKS William!!!!!  You rule.

I have the 1-69 Hot Rod and I think I was making myself blind staring at the tiny engine picture on page 33.

From your info, I just ordered the 4-69 PHR off EBay but did not find the 8-69 Road Test.....yet.

Road Test is really hard to find. Also notice the "reverse-polarity" battery.

Here's the photo.

Thanks again William!!!!!

I think I understand what you are saying....that it looks like the 1969 version, but the mesh is rotated by 90 degrees.

Again, THANKS.  This kind of stuff is keeping me up until 2 in the morning doing non-stop searches!

Here is a picture from the April 1969 PHR.

I found one that I believe is a perfect match.  The only problem with it is that the filter paper looks brown.  I'm not sure if it's dirty or just from age.  I am guessing it's from age since the filter paper looks like it's the same color as the first post of this thread #1 (filter on yenko.net) and #2) (filter on the 1970 Z/28) .

The original production-line filters had yellowish/brownish paper, as the paper was oil-wetted; later Service replacement A212CW filter elements weren't oil-wetted, and the paper was white.

Thanks John!  I had been trying to think of a way to lighten it up by cleaning it somehow, to make it a light yellow, but now I think I'll just leave it alone.  I hope to have the 69 Z/28 ready for next years Camaro Nationals.

Ok, so what filter would be correct for a late 08C Z/28 then?
