Odd find
« on: April 13, 2012, 03:35:24 AM »
I found four 1 1/2" by 1 1/2" pieces of paper taped under my drivers side carpet. One had a large B for body, one large P for paint , a large M for mechanical and the fourth had a Large R.T. no info. What does R.T. mean and why was it under my carpet ?

I'm sure John Z will know but I'm thinking it indicates roll test, a functionality check at the end of assembly. It was someting like a chassis dyno.

Curious, is this a NOR or LOS car?

This is a Feb. build Nor. plant.I also found a cut off piece of the headliner glued to th drivers side rocker shield that covers body wiring. Did they glue a sample to show what interior color to install down the line ?

The B,P,M,RT stickers (Body, Paint, Mechanical, Roll Test) went on the inside of the windshield as each inspection was completed so the car could be routed to where it needed to go next without having to read the master inspection ticket; if it had all four, it went to the Shipping Line.

It's not unusual to find pieces of headliner stuck on the floor; it was just about the first item installed on the Fisher Body Trim Line, and not all of the trimmings got cleaned up.

No, interior color was indicated on the Fisher Body firewall tag.  Just a scrap piece that fell during assembly.  You could finds all sorts of odd stuff in cars - bolts, plugs, etc dropped during assembly.

when I replaced the original carpet in my '69Z28, under the carpet, I found a brand new key, with the numbered knockout intact.   It was directly under the steering wheel..  I tried it in the ignition, it fit/worked perfectly.. :)
On a '57 BelAir, I found a factory 'paint sock' under the carpet.. it had the same blue color dripped down the side as my car.  A 'paint sock was used on the paint cup to prevent dripping onto the car.  (In '57, the cars were painted manually...
It almost seems that the factory worked intended to put something unique from the factory under all the carpets.. :)

Was the roll test done before or after the car was completed? If after, would the sheet be under the carpet?

The Roll Test was done immediately after the completed car was driven off the line, and the buyoff stickers wouldn't be under the carpet unless someone was playing games back on the Trim Line where the carpet was installed.
