Subframe date stamping
« on: March 11, 2012, 04:20:36 PM »
I have been following the restoration of two 67 pace cars on their web site. On one, it shows the subframe stamped up side down, and the other, right side up.  Did the subframe providers stamp their products differently?  I didn't catch if they were NOR or LA cars   ???

Subframes were shipped and store upside down, they had an orange inspection stripe on the side between the firewall body bushing support, and the control arm bushing mounts, that always have the drips on the top (because they were inspected when they were already upside down), so if they were date coded they should probably be upside down, but I guess it would all be in the way the guy grabbed the stamp, upside down, rightside up, vertical probably didn't matter to the inspector.

Its a painted on stamp (not a stencil) with a production (or inspection) date, that sat on top of the black coal tar paint that the subframes were dipped in so 99 percent of them faded away, and fell off with the coatings over the years. Very few cars have them.  Most don't even have the orange inspection stripe on them anymore and that was alot heavier paint than a stamped date.  most of the cars you see them on are in the restoration grafitti class of cars, and have 500 chalk marks on the firewall and every color known to man inspection paint daubs on every bolted connection on the car.  Same with powered coated subframes, gloss black painted undercarriges and suspensions that rival the finish on the top of the car.  GM slapped 900 of these cars a day out of the plant, they didn't pay as much attention to the bottom of the cars as owners do today.  They did what was required to build as many of these cars as they could to meet the demand.

I've never seen one of those '67 Sub-frame date stamps.  I found some stamped partial #'s  on the outside Pass. side about a foot from the back end.  I could not clearly make them out.  I do remember that part of it looked like it could be I 42, which would be close to build date of my 11A car.  Most other Date codes I've found are week 41 to week 44.

Might be an LA/NOR thing.  LA would probably have sourced their subframes locally since the shipping on them from the Michigan area would have been problematic.  Orange inspection stripes Norwood, date stamps for LA?  Maybe we need a thread like gas tank stamps to see who has what inspection mark, and where the car came from.  Originals only, no restored cars unless it was documented on the car itself.

My 04L Pacecar has just the slightest hint of an orange line behind the drivers side front wheel on the subframe.  I have never touched the subframe of my car except to replace springs and shocks.

Hi Mike,
Yes, I attached a photo to the post. I see it on my monitor, but if there is a problem , I'll attempt to post it again. Otherwise, it looks just like your photo.

Yeah Mike I'm sorry I didn't "Quote" you so you would know. The pic shows up but on my monitor it's a little too big to fit so I have to scroll it over to see the paint stripe is what I meant.

Heres another 67 LOS Pacecar stamp.  Believe its on the passenger side frame rail under the door; it also has the orange stripe on the outer face of the frame infront of the drivers wheel.

That was strange. My IE browser at work didn't display the pic but now I see it at home.

Thats sort of what we are trying to figure out.  Which ones had it, and where is it.  67's seem to have them on the passenger side rail in the vicinity of the firewall bushing support, so far the 69's seem to have them on the left front frame horn near the radiator bushing support hole, but thats only from 4 or 5 cars total, way to early to say anything definative.

Thank you guys for pointin this out - I knew/found the orange stripe, but never knew about the number
unfortunately 35 years of road grime and the like have not been kind
I see three distinct white marks but they are all illegible. I used dish soap to find the markings, but alot of the black paint is also gone, and all that is left is rust
