1967 Firebird all with 4 speed and floor shifter. Note that this one (P/N 390768) was superceeded by 3921147 which also fit 67 Camaro 4 speed, 68-69 Camaro 4 speed floor shift w/o console, 68-69 Nova with 4 speed floor shift, 68-69 Chevelle with 4 speed floor shift and 68-69 Corvair with 4 speed.

However, yours is missing the chrome piece.

Found it on multiple listings....from Corvette to Oldsmobile and several others in between.  Looks like it was probably a replacement for various original knobs.

Ed  I don't believe this knob ever had the chrome bottom. The chrome bottom is for locking the ball in position. With the set screw hole the bottom isn't needed. I'm sure you guys are right as it most likely  generic  gm replacement

Yes, it did. It came that way from service. Production line knobs had two separate part numbers, but service combined these two parts into one number that included both the black knob and the chrome base. I'm not sure why yours has an extra hole drilled and taped in it unless it was done by a prior owner, but here's what should have been included in the box:

Ed what I'm saying it that this ball is different The chrome on the bottom of the ball won't fit this ball  . Here is a pic of a real one .  As you see the orig  retainer does not fit this ball. So there needs to be smaller retainer for this ball

AH! I see what you mean now. In that case that knob is in the wrong box!

kerry, i have that exact ball with the threaded bottom but with no hole on the side. i believe production cars originally came with this ball and gm changed to the 2-piece because it kept stripping. my l78 originally came with the i piece ball.

I have an old orig big block shifter that has the two piece knob. The ball in the pic. is from that shifter If they ever came one piece and then switched over you would think your L78 car would be the two piece because of it being late production car . Maybe it was simply a supply issue. If they didn't have one they used the other

I have not seen that ball before but I have had some Muncie shifters that had a chrome lock nut on the thread but no ball was there.

It is a thin nut and is chrome so its not a hardware store nut.

I don't think the two piece ball used a nut so always wondered why the nut was still on the thread.
I thought they were from an aftermarket ball but maybe that ball came with a nut before the two piece design?
not sure

I have seen some black one piece balls (I think GTO) but they were 3/8-16 thread not 5/16-18

I saw a simmilar crappy looking black small plastic ball come out of a GM parts box back in the 80's. Bob Harris was trying to tell me that this ball was the current service replacement. It was FAR from production line quality. GM service part or not there was NO WAY would I have that on my car.
