67-69 Shock Retainer/washer
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:59:09 PM »
I thought this was one of our original shock retainers (one on the right).
Still has the trunk spatter on it but it measures 1.5" in diameter??
Other originals I have have similar design bur measure in that 1 3/8" ballpark (1.390").
Now I'm not so sure it was off our 68 but have no idea where else it would have come from???
Has anyone observed or have these 1.5" shock retainers/washers?
The AIM calls out the same part# shock retainer for the front and rear shocks.

Did not intend to have a double post. Lost my internet connection and thought it did not go only to find out it did.
My apologies!  :-[  Tried to delete one but it will not let me.......

Hi Chick,

Attached are 2 images of NOS shocks I have on a shelf since about 1984 and never have been on a car.
This is for a 'TM' shock P/N 3192831 with a date of 296 67 so this should be OK for an early 68 usage at least. The measurements are listed.
Hope this helps,

Mike

I wouldn't expect to see any spatter paint on that upper shock retainer; the spatter paint was sprayed in the Fisher Body Paint Shop, and the rear shocks were installed by Chevrolet, many hours later.

Come to think of it, comparing the washer Chick shows vs. the NOS one I have, it looks like it's the bottom washer so that would be on the outside of the trunk area. Notice the NOS top washer is larger and also has the shape of the retaining nut stamped into it.

Sure did help Mike so thank you for the great pics and John for clarifying the spatter paint!
Now what has me a little bewildered relates to the retainers/washers Mike displayed vs. the AIM calling out the same part number, #5544049. Does anyone have info on that part #? I do not remember any original retainers with the nut hex indented in the retainer but that means next to zero ;D Thanks again Mike and John!
