Documenting 68 Camaro Fasteners & Hardware

In an effort to determine what would normally be considered the correct fastener for different applications this thread is being developed to coincide with similar threads for 67 (hopefully) and 69 Camaro fasteners.  For a preliminary on how this came about please review the birth in thread http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9074.0 and http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9130.0
This effort will need the support and creation of sorts of a "team" and I have volunteered to be the team scribe and a team member. This could be huge in benefits for all of us and for years to come. Let the investigation and data collection begin.

Identified screw #3846202 5/16-18 X 3/4" lg w/captured washer 3/4" dia.
Did not complete entire AIM search but this screw is found on pages 61, 63, 73, 144, 145
Would love to note what others have found pertaining to their #3846202.
The picture of these two screws came out of our 68 01B NOR built Camaro.

Here is our orig. rear brake bracket where these screws are used.

The good news, AMK sells the same exact screw under G4348 but that is only for two.
Anyone have a AMK catalog to review bulk order AMK part #'s?

Chick, it will be week after next before I can have my AIM, camera and 68 in the same place, so be patient with me. Using Marty's charts I've checked my engine well and most markings are consistent in location and listed on the chart.

I have a list of hardware by part#/page but not quite complete. When finished I will add to this thread.
Started going through much of the extra hardware we have from our 68 and other donor Camaro's.
First up, part #9780422. Checked each one for who made and there were only three.
The picture shows 13, 9, & 10 pcs but I found 10 more 9780422 screws and they were a mix 2, 3, & 5 making
the total of the three head markings left to right 15, 12, and 15.
Small sample but statisically very even distribution. Used Marty's sheet to show who made the screws.
Can anyone confirm what supplier markings are on the AMK #9780422 supplied screw?

This notation is just to confirm the aftermarket screw/bolt replacements are not correct.
Original restored screw to the right vs. aftermarket to the left.

I have another set of original gas strap bolts and they have no marking on the head.
Can anyone supply info on what you have found?

Chick, any progress on the 68 AIM list?

I've gotten a start on my engine well and found mostly 4, 5, & 7 markings from Marty's list. So far they are pretty consistent per part. For example hood hinge were all 5s. Is that what you are finding?

Yes, this involves a lot! But your comparisons to the 69 AIM are very helpful. Pages from 68 to 69 do not always correspond, but if you look long enough in the same UPC sections you can find most.
Yes, it makes sense that on many parts the screws/bolts/etc would have been the same markings but certainly not all for several practical reasons.

Some valuable information concering quality and possibly safety of j-nuts! GM part # 3892755, found in 68 AIM page 66 (UPC 4 B1), attaches the front leaf spring bracket to the underneath unitized body. The j-nuts that have both quality and supply peace of mind concerning safety are the ones imprinted with a "CIP" and can be purchased through AMK. There are other similar generics that look similar but upon closer inspection they have issues and when you go to torque to the required 20 to 30 ft. lbs. you have risk of the thread pulling. Non CIP clips I looked at did not have full thread, and had less threads by up to 50%. This is not meant to communicate anything other than a CIP clip is junk, only that inspection and thought to where you purchase might be the prudent thing to do. In fact, not "might be" but "will be" the prudent thing to do. Let me tell ya what happened and then read an older post I found but found after the fact.
Remember recently I took the dummy rear out of the car and installed the original re-built 12 back in. After paint to install the dummy rear some new generic j-nuts were installed and used. When I took the dummy rear out I noticed the new j-nuts in location as the originals I had taken out when the original rear was removed. When I installed the orig. rear back in all six of the screws started nicely (3 for each bracket) and I hand snugged/tightened with a normal length 1/2" rachet and socket. Everything was fine or so I thought. After the rear was installed I later got under the car to torque those rascals to the required 20 to 30 ft. lbs. Set the torque wrench to 20 ft. lbs. and started to tighten but the bolt turned and turned. Realized quickly something was wrong. Went to another j-nut/screw and tried that one with same results but I gave it one or so more and I heard a pop sound. The thread had wiped off. Luckily the screw backed out like nothing happened and dropping the front leaf spring perch is pretty easy but the j-nut was junk. Ended up changing all three on the left side with 'CIP' j-nuts and guess what, they torqued with no issue. Went to the right side and tried to torque one with same negative result. Just decided to drop that front leaf spring eye and change those 3 j-nuts immediately. After changing the right side, all three torqued with no issues. Here are some pics showing differences and another write up found after the fact. Lesson learned by me that could save some of you some time and again possibly safety!. Still available through GM but the part # changed to 378276. AMK uses that 378276 part # in their catalog as well.

1969 Hurst shifter bolts that were on ebay

I have 2 sets these and mine have same 3/8 bolt with S B C head markings  but all 3 of the 7/16 bolts have different head markings

68 & 69 Assembly Manuals call out one screw assy. (part # 9419301) to be used to attach the hood hinge to the hood and fender but in reality two different screw assemblies were used. The 9419301 is a 3/8-16X13/16 lg. with a 1.0 captured washer. The original cars I have looked at the 9419301 has been used for attaching the hinge to the hood but the hinge to the fender uses the same type of screw but with a 3/4" captured washer.  Special thanks to my friend Mike!

I had placed this info in our Team Camaro build thread but thought it might be useful here as well.
Within the next few days the final assembly of our MO engine with start and I was getting hardware, etc. ready to go. Noticed something on the head bolts. OK, there are three different length bolts but did not remember so many different suppliers. All of the long bolts had a 'TR' symbol in the middle of the bolt head but the middle length bolts all had an 'A'. The short bolt that uses and exposes 8 in each cylinder head had a mix of 8 bolts with a 'CP', 5 with a funny looking 'O', and 3 with 'M'.

Recently it was pointed out to me that the end chamfer is not correct on the AMK bolts.
Just wanted to share that information.
Original to right and AMK to left after lathe rework.

Radio Ground strap (68 AIM page 409) from body to sub-frame utilizes screw 9420152. The screw is a self tapping, 1/4-20 x 1/2", with indented head. Our originals were 'E' and can be purchased @Corvette Central #192117 (2 for $2). Paragon offers the same screw with "RBW" #11189K, 7 screws for $5.00  67/68 Corvettes used this screw for radio ground straps and the front crossover brake line clip. Note: AMK does not offer this screw! Please note both of these screws were zinc.

The other ground straps (68 AIM page 408) use screw 9420415. I have found three different types but there may be many more. AMK does offer this screw.
