69 302 Starter Motor Brace Bolts
« on: January 26, 2012, 08:39:30 PM »
Can anyone tell what size and finish the bolts are for the starter motor brace on a 69 302?  Also, where I could get them.
Thanks

As a start, get the part number from the 69 AIM, then go to AMK Products website and click on the pdf catalog button on the left side.  The very last section at the bottom of the chapters list has a cross ref for some of the fasteners, see if yours is listed under GM section, then go to that page of the pdf catalog for a description and pic.  There is also a section somewhere in the catalog that describes the codes for the different finishes.  Many of the parts houses get their fasteners from AMK.  Others may comment here, to include opinion on AMK correctness, but always best to begin searching on your own.  You can also try advanced searches here, up near the top of the page, using a few key words.

Here is AMK's starter bolt set #B-5006.  The two primary bolts are 3/8-16 x 1.84 L and 3-5/8" L, both are 9/16" across the flats (AF).  The screw that secures the top bracket to the engine is a 5/16-18 x 5/8 L, 1/2 AF, and the nut is a 1/4-20, 7/16" AF.  AMK also sells each piece of hardware separately.

For the most part, AMK's hardware is functionally and visually correct, but may not exactly match the original head bolt markings.  As you will learn on CRG, several suppliers provided common used fasteners so variation in the head markings can be expected.

Good luck with your project!

I think what he is asking about is the nut and the black bolt in the pic..  These attach the brace at the front of the starter to the side of the block.  I believe they are 1/4 in.

Nope, 5/16-18 x 5/8 w/ captured lock washer.  Someone with Jerry M's book might be able to comment on the finish and head marking.

Thanks for all the replies.  I did find the 5006 kit of parts for the starter at AMK.  I already had the starter bolts, just needed the bolt and nut for the brace.  AMK has a minimum order of $30 so maybe I can find something temporary, hardware store etc., till I need other things from them.  None of the other usual parts houses seem to carry this item.

They have an online catalog you can order from.  I did that for my first order and they sent a catalog with the parts.

AMK's catalog is very extensive and worth the $ if you need to see hardware and cross reference it with the hardware called out in the factory assembly instructions manual or (AIM).  The AMK catalog is a must have along with the AIM if you are doing a complete and accurate restoration.

My hope is one day CRG will have a pictorial reference guide for nearly all the primary hardware pieces on our 1st Gens.  The pectoral guide could be organized and flow along with the AIM sections and show pictures of the hardware, and the variations in the hardware based on the various suppliers who provide a fastener for common used applications.

You will find in other hardware related discussion on CRG that AMK's hardware head markings may not exactly match the original hardware, but functionally and visually, it is as close as we can get for an accurate restoration.  The best solution is cleaning and replate the original hardware if it is restorable, which is often not the case due to rust and pitting.

Thanks!   I didn't know about this site, so in one day I have two means to identify fasteners from the AIM...  (I received an order from AMK today and they included a 'free' catalong.   The catalog does have means to look up and identify GM Pn's from the AIM as well... which is great!
