Finally home!!
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:18:08 AM »
It has been a while, but finally I got it home.  Now I'm a little bit closer to bringing my 69 Z back to life.  I could not get a hold of an enclosed trailer, so I thought about it, then decided I could use a 16' box truck.  Drove it back 450 miles and with only help from the wife we unloaded it without a scratch.  I'll let you guys guess how we did it  :D  (hint, we did not use a fork lift).

you have a 4 post lift with casters..  roll it in place behind the box truck, raise it to the same level, roll the car (is it on wheels?).. :)
if it is, just roll it onto the lift, then lower the lift to the point you can roll the entire thing back into your shop..

If it's not on wheels/tires, then....... I suppose you handled the rear of the car, and let your wife womanhandle the front??  :)

Jerry,

Cool pics. Very clever way to transport.

What's in the box, the hood? Where are the front fenders? Is that the subframe? Why is it white?

I'll go with 69Z28-RS's answer on how you got it off the truck.

What an exciting project!

Wow, tell us more about the project or what you know about the Z.  How about you used a rollback truck to get the car in as they are about the same height? Has the sub-frame been sprayed with polyester?
Glad you got it home and good luck,

I see the truck has a lift gate on it. And looks like body is sitting on a roll cart. Did you balance it on the lift gate while your wife operated the gate?

Great stuff Jerry, good luck with getting her back together and on the road. I am sure she will be a beauty when finished.
Best to you . When you get time we will talk about the trunk divider!

Thanks everyone!!  When we loaded it up, Mike had a fork lift with long extension arms, so getting it in was fairly easy.  We pushed it all the way to the front that way if I had to jam on the brakes it would not go flying.  The bed of the truck did not have floor tie downs, so I picked up some from Tractor Supply on the way down and we drilled the floor and bolted them in, and when I unloaded I filled the holes with dole rod.  It was loaded and sitting on 2 4x4s, the box in the back of the truck is the hood and inside the car you can see the boxes that contain the doors.  I did not take the front fenders down, they are in the attic awaiting prep.  Mike said the subframe is primered with some sort lead primer, I'll make sure not to eat the paint chips :-)

Now to the unloading part, I got everything unstrapped and slid two four wheel floor dollies under it so it would be easier to roll it to the back.  I had Mike make me two hooks that I could bolt into the bumper holes and I hooked up an engine hoist.  I raised it up so that the front was on the two pinch welds and took out the dollies, I did not want it take off suddenly if it remained on the dollies.  I had the wife stand outside with the engine hoist while I got inside with one of the 4x4s and leveraged it at the fire wall tunnel lifting it slowly to slide it on the pinch welds.  At about 80% of the way out the wife started to freak, so I had her get in the truck to take over that operation but she could not figure out what I was talking about and I did not want to leave the hoist unattended so I told her to get back on the hoist we are almost done.  So she toughed it out and I got the front end to the lift gate quickly and from that point it was easy, I had her lower the gate slowly as I lowered the hoist.  Once it was close to the gound I put the dollies under the pinch welds and with the hoist still attached, rolled it into the garage.

Oh, it sounds like it will cost more than a dinner. Jerry, well done!

Mike and John, I owe her way more then dinner just for the fact that she let me chase this car, she could have a lot of shoes and dresses for what I have into it so far, not to mention what I still have left to do.  Next on the docket is to put the subframe under it and attach the body panels and doors so that the fit can be set up.  Then prep it for paint, Cortez Silver, no vinyl top.  I'll take pictures along the way and share, though it may take a while as funds dictate :-)

Yea I know the felling, my wife put up with a 4 year resto. on our Z that is still not done! I just tell her its not done so I can tweak minor items to factory specs.
Good luck can't wait to see and watch the progress as she comes together
Take care

Michael,

your Z28 may not be *finished*, but the photo you sent me is so gorgeous, I've temporarily set it as my 'background' on my computer.  it gives me incentive to head to the basement garage each evening.. :)

Thanks pal I really appreciate the nice compliment. Motivation is the key to getting these projects finish since so many languish due to many reasons. You'll get it done and it will  be beautiful............!
