Shifter rods
« on: January 04, 2012, 01:08:22 AM »
Man am I going through a lesson with my 69 convertible. By way of background, the car was originally a L-65 car with a Saginaw 4 speed. Well it has the born with block and rear end but the tranny was replaced with a 71 Saginaw with an after market Chevelle Hurst Competition plus shifter. I am putting things back together correct with the Saginaw. I found a very lightly used OEM Hurst Comp plus shifter for a 69 Camaro and put it in. Well I can't get the shifer 100% adjusted so it will not hit the trans tunnel/console. I expect potentially two problems. I am guessing the shifter rods for a Chevelle, (if there is a difference) or the shifter plate I am using is a problem. I was using what looked like an OEM shifter plate, but the shifter really fit crappy. I am now using the shifter plate that came with the old Chevelle shifter and the fit is better??

Two questions...probably a stupid question but is there any difference in the Saginaw shifter rods for a Chevelle and Camaro? Is there a certain shifter plate I should be using. Again, I have what looks like the one in the AIM but it made the shifter fit worse... :-\

Thanks

Lawrence

You have a mix and match of tranny, shifter, and linkage pieces. If you get the right '69 Camaro pieces they will fit but trying to get a mixed setup to work is a real chore especially if there is a console involved. There are other threads here on the subject. Bottom line - get the right stuff for your car and sell the stuff that is for a different car. That is the best way to make it work.

post a picture of your set up and post any numbers on the parts
and we can help you

Hurst does not make an install kit for 69 Camaro with sag
they told you to use the Hurst shifter with the factory rods and mount plate
