I am building a 69 Z 28 clone. I am looking to do it on a budget if possible. I would like the car to apprear correct for the most part. I am open to suggestions of all types. Motor will be dressed stock 302 for the most part. No overly concerned with the internals. I would also like to build something that will give the project as much value as possible. I am not looking for a money pitt project. Looking to spend wisely, get as much performance as possible for a weekend driver. will have a Muncie M20 Trans, 342 373 or 410 rear gear, Chambered exhaust.

Which is the better motor combo for my project. I am looking at a few different motor options. I want to make sure I buy the right set up for maximum value and quality.

This L-82 is an original bore Corvette motor. Currently a short block. Needs to have cam and heads installed. Heads are 492 Angle plug or 186. This motor would be oil pan to intake. This package would cost $2500.00.

The other option is this 1970 LT1 same angle plug 492 heads or 186 heads. Oil Pan to intake, except blanced & blueprinted. $4000.00.

Which one is the better deal and better way to go for this project?

I'd stick with 186 heads - angle-plug heads were never used on any production engine, and stand out like a sore thumb if you want it to look correct.

I would consider using the LT-1 for a clone project. Same sound and idle, better torque, solid lifters, EASY to find the pieces. Big reliable power. What's not to like about that?

L82 with small chamber heads is a darn good mild HP engine. I have one myself in my Vette. But this is a HYDRAULIC LIFTER cam!!! NO WAY does it belong in a first gen Z/28 clone.

Both are 4 bolt main blocks with high nickel content, Steel crank,Pink rods,2.02 intake 1.60 exhaust valves. Great bottom end with the L82, Improved hi RPM with the LT1.

Both motors would use the same carb Holley 650 DP, stock LT1 intake, and either 492 Angle plug or 186 heads.

L-82 flat top would run great on the street. Picking your cam is very important. Just my 2 Lincolns worth.  Grin

Your looking for bang for your buck. Not what you asked, but I would lose the chambered exhaust for a better performing & less expensive aftermarket exhaust with original looking tail pipes.

Chambered exhaust is used off a buddys car, so it is cheap with headers.
