Rear end decode

I just got the numbers off the rear in my '68 RS. All I can make out is PW 12270. The PW gears seem to be used only in '67 models, so I assume the rear was assembled in December '66? My car was assembled in November 67, so I'm not sure if the rear is original or not.

That's correct. You have a 2.73 open 10 bolt assembled on December 27th, 1966 at the Detroit Gear and Axle plant. Not original to your car.

Hi Kid,

  Are you sure the 0 is not a G? There should be a G # (1 or 2) depending on what shift the unit was made.
The Dec 27th '66 date would seem too far in the past for your car, IMO, but who knows if it sat on a rack somewhere for a long time before being used. The 2 Camaros I have with original rears has one 'BJ' rear (LOS plant) dated 0404 for a 4B (April 13th per UOIT) dated trim tag and the other 'QK' (NOR plant) dated 0331 for a 5B dated trim tag.

Thanks Ed. That's what I was afraid of. I guess that solidifies my thoughts of going the resto mod route since it's a low option car and already had the original intake and carb swapped years ago.

67: I'm not too sure on the last digit. it's only half visible, so I thought it was zero. Probably is a G, though. The shift number is not visible at all.
