Speedo cable retainer clips.
« on: September 28, 2011, 03:51:57 AM »
Where can I get CORRECT speedo cable retaining clips?  I know there are a lot of repops available.  Is one actually a dead ringer for the originals?

Anyone have a line on a set of three originals?

thanks for any help.

The speedo cable routing and clip locations are shown in the M20 section of the Assembly Manual.

Nobody makes a correct one. The repops are JUNK!Way over priced also. Talked to Ricks and they said I didnt know how to install them. I offered to pay the guys airfare to watch him install them. Find some nice used ones and have them replated the correct silver cad. John

I had to make a die and anvil to reform then file the repro's forever to get them to look close enough for me...

That is what I figured.  That is why I don't want repops.

It is the clip labeled #3 on the M20 page 3 locations.
Its application is specific to the speedo cable on the Muncie Transmission.

Still looking for three of these clips for a 69 Camaro muncie car.
Obviously, would be glad to purchase one or two.

The ones I got from Classic Muscle worked great.

Well, guess for now I will settle for some repops.  Have a link to the classic muscle web site?

Thanks.

My guy said he didn't have any, but was checking for some at a swap meet.  I will let you know what he finds.  Nothing happens quickly it seems when you need a part like that.

These are only used on 4 speed cars, not automatics?   I couldn't find a reference to these clips in the AIM fora 350TH.

Only used on Muncie 4-speed cars (pass. side speedo connection).

Even though it's not Perfect, it is much better than the "off the shelf" version.

Ok, got the ones from classic muscle.  I am sure I can make them work, but they look just like the "typical repro" above, so not really a match, but at least can be made functional.

Are the HBC ones any better?

No, they appear to have a little more of an arc, however it looks as though they came from the same die as the forms of the lip on the end are the same along with the other details.

Here is a quick sketched and dimensioned Oblique, well sorta... my mechanical drawing skills leave much to be desired...  :P.

Much to be desired or not, still quite helpful, especially considering I don't have even one original to use as a model.

Thanks.

None of the photos above show the correct (uninstalled) configuration of the "legs" of the clip. Photo below shows a similar type of clip, used on '63-'67 Corvette "eyebrow pads" on the instrument panel; you squeezed the "wings" on the clip together with needlenose pliers, and that expanded the "legs" behind the hole, retaining the clip. Once the clip is installed and then the wings are "un-bent" to be removed, most of that feature is lost.
