Opinions on 302-DZ Camming Upgrade
« on: August 02, 2011, 07:39:51 AM »
I'm looking to upgrade the valve train components on my 302 which is currently all stock with the 373 rear gears. As a cam upgrade I'm considering the Competition Cams XE284H (recommended by a local engine builder) and a Pete Jackson timing gear drive. Any camming suggestions or comments on keeping the solid lifter vs hydraulic.... other than authencity would be much appreciated?

Specs:
240 deg duration - 507" lift intake
246 deg duration - 510 lift exhaust

That gear drive will be noticed a block away and in my opinion a Z ain,t a Z without solids.

You know you are getting old when the first time you hear a gear drive, you think there's something really wrong with the car you are hearing/seeing. Then some younger person informs you that what you are hearing is a gear drive setup and it's normal. And you are like "why would anybody want to make noise like that?" I'm turning into my father!!

I agree, and the original "30-30" cam is what gives the Z its distinctive character.

X2....Wouldn't be a Z without the "30-30" sound.

The -140 cam is an option. It will prefer a set of 4.10's though.

Years ago I had a Chevelle with a "quiet" Pete Jackson gear drive and it made no sound at all.  But the sound of solid lifters is something I will always have in my Z.  Plus there's few things that sound tougher than the whine of an M-22 so drowning that out with a "noisy" gear drive would be a shame.

I have a CC XS282S-10 and I'm real happy with it.  I can't compare it to the 30-30 because the motor that was in the car had the LS1 cam in it for the 70 Z28.  It went like a diesel rabbit with that cam.  Some torque but absolutely nothing after 4K.

Great to hear all the helpful comments from the CRG guys...... had to chuckle at the age related one, good one Jimmy! You've all convinced me to go solid....and the more noise the better!
