Rusty Jowett's 1968 Camaro Trans-Am Race Car
« on: August 02, 2011, 04:01:21 AM »
Ok, so here are some photos of Rusty Jowett's 1968 Camaro.  These images are also courtesy of Pat Hogan, the current owner of this very successful "independent" Camaro.  Though this car was run by an independent, it's beginnings were planned for a factory effort.  More about this car's history can be found here on the Historic Trans-Am website.

  • The first pic below shows Rusty Jowett's 1968 Camaro in Mark Schwein's Garage
  • The second pic below shows Rusty Jowett's 1968 Camaro, but with Mark Schwein leaning on the car to talk to MARK DONOHUE (most likely testing the car).

These two images are also courtesy of Pat Hogan,

  • The first pic below shows Rusty Jowett's 1968 Camaro with Mark Donohue laying on the lawn (in white driver's suit) looking under the rear of the car (with Rusty kneeling in driver's suit, also behind car).   Pat and I think this was taken at Lime Rock Park.  Jowett's father has the Super 8 camera.
  • The second pic shows Rusty Jowett's just completed 1968 Camaro.  The car awaits loading for a trip to Daytona.  The car was towed on an open trailer by the Chevy pick up in the background.

Priceless photos! Great details can be seen and it's fun to see cars in other settings besides on the race track. Of note, the maroon and yellow #37 Camaro was owned and driven by Len Greenhalgh and was sold to Frank Grimaldi around 1970-71. Frank still owns it. Apparently it is the same car that Skip Barber drove at the '68 Bryar Trans-Am.

Getting back to Rusty's '68, this was a very fast and well prepared car. Probably the best prepared Camaro outside of the Penske team and I believe it had the best results of any Camaro besides those of Penske when Rusty was racing the car. Thanks again to Pat Hogan for sharing these photos with us. They are greatly appreciated!

Rusty Jowett in the car at the 1969 Daytona 24-hour race. Craig Fisher was Rusty's co-driver for this race.

Yeah, I thought it looked pretty nice. First time I had seen it in person. Richard Goldsmith is the new owner.

Here is how the car looked back in July 1996 when I saw it during my annual visit to the Vintage races at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Came across this interesting photo of a #92 1968 Camaro racing at an SCCA event called the Cotton Carnival Grand Prix which was apparently held May 3-4, 1969 at the Shelby County International Raceway in Lakeland, Tennessee near Memphis.  Is this the Rusty Jowett 1968 Camaro?  I have never heard of this track but it must have been a major SCCA event because Bob Tullius and his Group 44 Triumphs were there according to the pictures.

I found the picture among a group of 60 photos from the event at the Revs Institute web site.

1) photo of #92 Camaro: https://library.revsinstitute.org/digital/custom/single-image?id=540249&collection=p17257coll1

2) photo showing 1969 Cougar Eliminator Pace Car with event decals: https://library.revsinstitute.org/digital/custom/single-image?id=547228&collection=p17257coll1

I somehow forgot to post the pictures for my previous post.

That is Rusty's Camaro but the track is Marlboro Raceway in Maryland so the photo is misidentified. I suspect Bob Tullius is also at Marlboro but did not look at the photo.
