OK guys educate me.
« on: August 01, 2011, 02:08:55 AM »
As some of you may know we have a new member that is being offered the original motor and some other parts for his Z. I plan to assist him in verifying the numbers and date codes. I am familiar with documenting Mopars but am not completely up to date on Camaros. What we need is date ranges for engine parts and accesories for his build date. It would also be helpful to know the part numbers for the major components i.e. heads, carb, dist, alt, waterpump, starter, and the likes. As you post I will begin to chart it have us a cheat sheet when we walk in. If there is a CRG page (which I am sure there is) feel free to derict us there.

Misse we need the build date which will be on the data tag above the brake booster and will be in a month/week format like 12C, Dec third week.

Thanks in advance to all that helps, Kevin

Hey Kevin,  I think it's great what your doing helping out Misse with his Camaro. I'm not that familiar with the 68 Z28 but I'm sure there are plenty of others on this site that are. I wish you guys the best of luck and I hope it all turns out good. Please keep us posted with your progress.

head cast. 3917291

dist.  1111266 (early) or 1111467

R exh cast. 3872730
L exh cast. 3892683

intake cast. 3917610

PB booster 8515 (early) or 9078

MC 5460346 "WT"

trans. cast main 3925660

It would be best to know the build date, but most items should be a month or two before the car's build date and all engine components have to be dated before the assembly date.

Crank pulley 3858533 (double)

If power steering also add single groove 3916385 at the crank.

The pulley on the power steering pump would be 3873847

On a personal note 20 years ago my dad tried buying back the '70 LS6 Chevelle he bought new.  He had ended up with the original engine block after the local dealer tried scrapping it due to a "casting issue" that never checked out.  (The CE block was built into an LS7 that I still own today - 2nd design open chamber aluminum heads and all.)  However the guy who now owned the car wanted to buy the block.  Neither would give and my dad then realized this block was no more valuable to him than any other 454 block.  While he was offered $10,000 for the block he made a deal for a lesser amount because he felt it was more reasonable.  He also threw in all the original paperwork including the check he paid with.  You know your Z28 is worth more with the original block.  I only hope you are dealing with someone who will treat you right.

Thanks to you all for your help and well wishes and especially thanks to Mopar!  I wish the seller of the engine and parts had a quarter of the character that you all have.  The build date that I found on the Cowl tag was 04C.  The VIN# is 124378N416433.  I am going to try and take a picture of the Cowl Tag and post it here.  I have not e-mailed the seller back yet.

Buy Jerry's book. http://www.z28camaro.com/publications.html

I was going to say that too, but I got tired of looking up all those numbers and I was done.

Not a bad idea guys, but do we have time to get it before next week? I am leaving for Ohio on Friday or Saturday so Misse would need to get it shipped to her and that would not allow me time to study it properly. Is it available electronically?

Thanks for all who have given info, it is greatly appreciated by both of us.

Have someone PM you with Jerry's contact # and have it shipped overnight. There isn't a lot of studying required. I have a copy and its all spelled out.

Did you or Misse ever get a pic of the engine pad?

Not a bad idea, no photos yet to my knowledge, this guy is being a real gem. I just hope he doesn't turn on her for no reason and shut the deal down. I can see him doing it if we say anything negative. I'll be on my good behavior.
