302 Rocker Arm Nuts

Can anyone verify the correct Rocker Arm nuts for 67, 68, 69 302's.  I believe the nut on the right side was used on 67 and left was used on 68 and 69.  Can anyone verify this as being correct or know of something else.

Gary, I'm not sure on the one on the right, but according to the P&A, every 1960-1968 engine (execpt the big block) used the same nut, P/N 3744341 (3/8" x 24). That's the one on the left.

The big blocks used P/N 3896648 (7/8" x 20).

I thought that was correct also till I looked a mans 1967 one owner 62,000 miles 283 and it has the nut on the right on it. I just wanted to make sure before I put this thing together.The low mileage 68 and 69 I have looked at have the other nut.  Thanks alot,   Gary

I have seen both on many original engines........we have always called them friction nuts.........

can't see them under the valve cover so I would not lose sleep over it. I would assume they used both designs.

My engine was rebuilt once in my old Van Nuys 69 Z but everything on this car is original so maybe the rocker arm nuts are too. They look like the ones on the left. Here are some thumb nails to large photos. This is my 711 76 76 style trim Z that Jerry looked at in NC back in 2005 or so. Very original Z

Just to show you how this could be true about using both designs....I have an original '68 Z28 and the engine has different exhaust manifold bolts on different sides of the engine.  Apparently the bolt bins on each side of the engine had different bolts in them and the assembler installed whatever was in the bolt bin.  I also have seen different bolt numbers installed on the body assembly other than the ones called for in the AIM.  So either the bolt bins had the wrong bolts in them or the assembler installed whatever he grabbed out of the bin, regardless of the number.

So....as  Forrest would say "Life is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you are going to get".  I think that might describe the assembly line at times.   ::)
