4P 396?
« on: July 17, 2011, 10:44:26 PM »
My brother is the owner of a 67 SS Camaro. According to the cowl tag, the car was a factory 4spd, basic interior, maderien maroon, with a date 10C (3rd week Oct '66). It has the 4P code, but no signs of the bracket to bolt the tortion bar to. As. Far as I can tell the floor looks original. Could this have been an early 396 car ? ( motor and muncie are now gone, unfortunately)

4P is the designation for either the L48 SS 350 engine or the L30/M20 327/275 with 4 speed. Your car is a little too early for the rod, but for an October 1966 car, the 4P would indicate an SS350. What are all the codes on the tag?

HERE'S more info on the 4P code.

I don't have access to the codes right now, lol cause my brother lives about 60 mi. away. Buta few things I do know is the vin is around 20,000 Norwood built, and speedometer exits right side of steering colum meaning Muncie, if I remember correctly. I was thinking I had heard some early Z28s and 396s had been 4P cars, but wasn't sure of the fact.

Correct, but the first Z28 wasn't produced until early 1967 and the first L78 wasn't produced until later in the year.

I see. So with the right side speedometer cable, and 4P code, SS350, and not the L30/ M20?

Yes. They didn't start using the 4P designation on the L30/M20 until (approx) late December of 1966.
