Heavy duty GM 12-bolt axles
« on: July 12, 2011, 02:54:53 PM »
I was told about a recent ebay auction which featured some very rare NOS 12-bolt axles designed for heavy-duty use and Trans-Am racing. These were listed as part number 3927508 in the Chevrolet Special Equipment catalog (aka Green Sheets). These axles are a rare find and are real GM parts, not aftermarket.  They were meant for 1967 - 1969 Chevrolet Camaros with rear drum brakes and utilized 1/2" studs (per the catalog).  The axles are stock length as well as the spline count (30).  The casting numbers on the end of the axles look like they are 9145 and 9349. Below are some photos of the actual parts.

Ed Bertrand sent me a listing from his 1971 Chevy P&A catalog showing the jobber price of $22.84 for one of these axles back them. Over the weekend, the pair above sold for over $2500!

Do you know if they are made for small or large Bearing?

I'm pretty sure they are for the standard (small) Camaro-sized bearings rather than the larger Impala size. Can anybody else confirm?

Wow...who knew!

We had 4 axles we rotated for several racing seasons.  Eventually, we came to fear a failure and replaced them with axle's from Strange Engineering...

I'm sure we just tossed the original axles years ago...

I have a NOS set of the HD axles.  I measured the machine portion where the bearing would be.  It measures 1.40 inches.  I don't have a bearing to measure the ID so I can't compare.  I had planned to use them in the late 60's on a stock class drag race Camaro.

I've got a used set of stock 12-bolt axles out in the garage and they also measure 1.40" out at the bearing surface.

And Impala are 1.6.

The Heavy Duty Service Replacment Rear Disc Brake kit did have ends that have different bolt pattern.
Are they same as Impala, and have Impala Bearing?
