Here is a photo of the 1968 Mercury Cougar paceing the field during the pace lap of the Lime Rock 3-Hour race Trans Am race at Lime Rock Park, Lime Rock, Connecticut on May 30, 1968.  The photo came from this site: http://public.fotki.com/gwadagone/trans-am-racing1966/

Great research, posts and links SMKZ28. I'm glad that my observation helped you. That's a neat picture of the AMX-R. I have always liked that car.

Thanks MO.  I live for this kind of stuff.

Here is a picture of the 1970 Chevy Corvette roadster that paced the Trans Am race at Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, California on April 19, 1970.  I found this picture on this forum.

While this is not a Trans Am race the attached photo shows the same 1968 Jeffords AMX-R that either paced the 1968 Trans Am race or was part of the pace lap along with the white 1968 AMX shown in the earlier posts.  This picture shows the car pacing the Formula B cars at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on July 20, 1969.  This was a support race for the Formula 5000 Continental Championship, so it probably paced the three separate heats that were run for those cars as well.  I found it on page 67 of my book on the history of Road America entitled, "Road America: Celebrating 50 Years of Road Racing" by Tom Schultz.  You can see a flagman in the rumble seat in the yellow shirt.  Since the Hemmings article about this car in an earlier post states that Jeffords donated the AMX-R to the Brooks Stevens Museum in 1969, it must have been sometime after July 20th.  This also proves that this car did not pace the 1969 Donnybrooke Trans Am race on July 6, 1969 since it still looks the same as it did in 1968 and that Trans Am race was only 2 weeks before the pictured race took place.

The 1967 Riverside 250 Trans-Am pace car had a red & silver paint job to match the Bud Moore Cougars.
I'm not sure what engine was in it. Here the pace car can be spotted above the hood of David Pearson's Cougar.

The next three posts contain pictures of the Dover White 1969 Chevy Camaro SS 396/RS convertible that was apparently used to pace the Wolverine Trans Am race at Michigan International Speedway, Irish Hills, Michigan on May 11, 1969.  You can see that the top is up because it was such a cold and rainy day.  I say apparently because this is one of the ten 1969 Camaros purchased by Nascar to be used for pacing duties during Nascar events and the photo doesn't actually show it on the first lap.  I found the picture in an article in the June 2000 edition of Mustang Monthly Magazine and it is entitled, "Racing Legends: Jones and Follmer Speak Up and Out." I used my digital camera because my scanner isn't working.

This picture shows the car in the two previous posts.  It is from an article entitled, "1969 Camaro Pace Cars" which appeared in the January/February 1992 edition of Muscle Cars of the 60s/70s.  The caption that appeared next to it states, "Michigan International Speedway was a new facility in 1969.  Located about 55 miles west of Detroit, the super speedway used a white 396 powered Camaro as its pace car for one or more events, including the Motor State 500 on June 15 of that year."  I think this picture might prove that the car was also used to pace the Trans Am race more than a month before the Nascar event in June!

They also must have used the Camaro in the previous 3 posts to pace the Can Am race at Michigan International Speedway on September 28, 1969.  Here is a picture of the podium finishers riding along in the Camaro.  You can see Bruce McLaren (1st), Denny Hulme (2nd), Dan Gurney (3rd) and Sterling Moss.  The picture is part of the Dave Friedman Collection at The Henry Ford and can be seen here: http://thehenryford.artehouse.com/perl/options.pl?imageID=118566&productTypeID=62&ckon=imageThumb

Here is the Michigan International Speedway 1969 Camaro SS/RS pace car again during the Can Am race mentioned above.  You can see it parked across from pit lane.  See a clearer picture of it here: http://thehenryford.artehouse.com/perl/options.pl?imageID=118481&productTypeID=62&ckon=imageThumb  Just click on the picture to magnify it.

Here you can see the Camaro after the Can Am race finished parked right next to where the winning McLaren is being pushed into the winners circle.  You can see it here: http://thehenryford.artehouse.com/perl/options.pl?imageID=118455&productTypeID=62&ckon=imageThumb

Here is the Michigan 1969 Camaro pace car again in a picture taken by Dave Friedman during the 1969 Wolverine Trans Am.  You can see it parked between pit lane and the race track.  See a larger and clearer version here: http://thehenryford.artehouse.com/perl/options.pl?imageID=178890&productTypeID=62&ckon=imageThumb
