68 Alternator Fan
« on: May 24, 2011, 01:12:26 PM »
I have a 68 Camaro with the L30 327.  I seem to have an unusual alternator fan.  The alternator (and fan) are original to the car.
Has anyone ever seen a fan like this?

Jeff,

Your first pic was just fine...I was assuming something else.

Can't help you with this one but it certainly looks like the fan and face of the alternator has been touched up.

^Yes, the fan was painted and the alternator housing was refinished when it was rebuilt about 15 years ago.
I'm in the process of trying to get the finishes correct and noticed the fan doesn't look like all the other ones I have seen.

Are you questioning the number of grooves in the blade?

^Yes, as well as the shape of the blades and the number of blades.

It appears to have 13 blades which is incorrect for a first generation Camaro. With few exceptions (see below), just about every Chevrolet built in the 60's used the same 11 blade fan. However, if you look in the AIM on UPC 6 sheet A3 or A4, (And UPC K76 Sheet A1), you'll see what looks like YOUR fan!! 13 (?) blades and one groove on each blade!

What's the numbers stamped on your alternator?

Interesting.  Didn't think about checking the AIM.  Both my AIM and alternator are at the body shop with the car right now, so I don't have the alternator number.
Will the 2-letter code stamped (in ink) on it tell you anything?  I can get that easily from some old pictures I have.

The 2-letter code ink-stamped on the alternator is "BT" along with a blotch of red paint just to the right of the stamping.

"BT" doesn't look familiar, but I don't have a lot of 68 CBC's to go on. What are the numbers stamped into the housing itself?

Ed,
Didn't early 60s Corvettes use a 13 blade fan?

Yes, you're right! And I think it was 1963 only.

John?

Really need the numbers off of the alternator to really tell what's up.
Never seen a BT code alt.

I have several 1100794 alternators and none have an ink stamp on them. Did they have ink stamps in 68?

Not that it matters much for originality, but I was looking at the "Trans Am Camaros" section and noticed the following post.  Check out the alternator fan.  Looks just like mine.
Anybody have some good Trans-Am engine compartment photos they would like to post?

Here's one of the Dick Guldstrand Dana-sponsored Camaro. Notice the spacers under the
thermostat housing, possibly to elevate the upper radiator hose away from the fan belt.
Click here for comments about the water pump pulley.
