Head/Block/Intake/Exhaust casting
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:53:44 PM »
Good day,
I am new here and thus far am very impressed with the site.  I have already learned so much.  I have some experience with older Corvettes but am new to the Camaro world.

I recently purchases a 67 rs.  I was informed it was numbers matching though some of that could not be verified at the time of purchase so I am going through all that I can to either confirm or deny.  I like the car anyway, so if it turns out that it is not I will survive.

First off, the block was decked so of course build and application/VIN stamping(s) are gone.  I have recruited an employee of the crime lab and in two weeks we are going to acid etch the block pad to see if we can pull up the stampings.  If so, I will of course document it either way.

I do know the car was originally a V8.  It does have the 4BBL so I am leaning towards the 275 HP, 327.
Other facts:
Trim Tag Build Date:11B
Head casting:3890462, date K16 (Left side).  Both have the "double humps"
Engine Block casting:3892657, date H66
Intake Casting:3905393, date J46
Exhaust:3892679

As near as I can determine the dates all jive with each other but any input would be appreciated.

I have read through both of those.  My questions are related to the dates themselves.  Are they too close to each other, too far apart?  The head date being K16.  If I am doing the conversion correctly that is October 1, 1966.  The block date would be August 6, 1966.  Is the intake date (J46) October or September 4, 1966?  I am asking because of the omission of the letter "I" for some castings.  Either way, do the October/August/September dates correlate to components that could have been mated together for the same engine?  Of course keeping in mind the 11B trim tag date.

I am considering if they were possibly combined by GM, or has someone had to have painstakingly gathered them up.

Heads - K16 = Nov. 1 1966

Block - H66 = Aug. 6 1966

Intake - J46 = Oct. 4 1966

I'm no expert and I'll let someone else chime in on the dates, but it seems like a long span between a 11B car and an Aug. block.

No expert but it seems like you have a piece mill engine. Those dates are all over the place and by November the assembly should have most of the wrinkles ironed out.

I should have asked in the original post:  As we try to pull up the stamped numbers in a couple of weeks, am I looking for the build stamp AND partial vin, or just the build stamp?  I have read that 1966 builds for 1967 model years may not have had the partial VIN stamped.  The same information further stated that all 68s would have had the partial vin.

John has given you the same links most of us use to decode a drive train. Most of the information you need is right here. Have you tried pulling numbers off of your Rear Axle & Transmission? This should give you more clues as to the engine your car was born with. Unfortunately it is very difficult to nail down your engine w/o a partial Vin. Hopefully your CSI acid test will work. If it does...document, document, document, and take before & after pics to support your findings.

I am very curious to see what your engine stamp looks like now. Is it possible to post a pic?

I will get the axle and transmission (Powerglide) when I get the car in the air.

The engine build date stamp will obviously be a help if you can get it.  There won't be a VIN stamp on a 327, but check that area also.

Was your car assembled at Van Nuys?  My 11B RS/SS 350 was missing its original motor, but I did locate and buy the engine from another LOS 350 MU that was around 750 units ahead of mine, on that mixed model line, so around 2 days earlier.  This is the same 657 block casting as you have, and it too is a H66 casting date.  Don't have the pics in front of me but I believe my engine build date was around H196 and the heads were cast close to the block cast date.  So I'd say that at first glance your heads and intake are not date correct, but the block might be the "born with" based on the casting date and what I've observed.  The August engine in an 11B build is possible, although personally I'd just seen it in 350s.

Pete,
Mine is a NOR car but it is reassuring to know you have an 11B car with a H66 block.  Also, good to know there will not be a vin on the engine, I'd hate to keep putting acid on.  We are still planning on attempting the code recovery.

Since it was decked you may as well check the entire pad, you never know what will show up.  Post up pics of the trim tag and rear axle stamp as they become available.
