Air Cleaner 427/425hp L72?
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:23:44 PM »
How should a proper air cleaner look like on a 427/425hp L72?
It is in a -69 Camaro, not a Cowl Induction hood.

And where can I find an accurate reproduction?

Thanks,
GUS

If they had made one I would think it would match the L78 non cowl hood cars.

While Buddy is correct that all COPO 9561's came with the "special ducted hood" (more info HERE), if the engine was installed by a dealer, then just about any air cleaner could have been used.

However, if you don't want to go with the cowl hood, for something "period correct" you would probably want to go with the standard open element air cleaner kelley referred to. I've heard that PARAGON makes a very good reproduction but John could probably verify this.

that statement was for gus kelley, not for you. not sure if he is building something or working on a real one. just putting it out there.

I don't think it's a real one. From his signature, he's got a convertible.

Okay guys.
Let me clarify my intentions.

I have a 427/425hp engine from a COPO Camaro.

I'll mount it in my -69 Camaro SS Conv.
It is an original SS350 L48, but now I want to put in my 427 instead.
The car has an SS hood.
So what I want help with, is to know which air cleaner should I have?

/GUS

Very observant, to see that it is not a original ;)

Before we start, can you tell me the VIN and the suffix code on the block you have? I'd like to add it to the database.

Now, the problem is that you're adding something that never was from the factory. Not only was the COPO 9561 not available on a convertible, on the coupe it automatically came with the cowl hood so there's no "correct" air cleaner except the cowl air cleaner when referring to the L72 on a 69 Camaro.

You could go with the open element air cleaner to be "period correct", but you'll never be "factory correct" since there's nothing to reference. See what I mean?

An L-78 air cleaner should work fine.

Thanks John

And I know very well that there was no original 427 Convertibles.
My intention is to make it look like if it was "original mounted" at this time,
as it could have looked like.
