Make sure you find a competent rebuilder. Some shops are better than others.

Good sound advice, will do. First I have to find the correct starter. The one in the car works great...it just isn't the correct one.

Okay...lets try this. If someone was to change the windings in the 1108361 to convert it into a high torque starter, would this take care of the "Hot Cranking" issues. Since the 420 is so dad-gum hard to find it seems like this would be a viable alternative.

Marty don't quote me on this but I believe the high torque starter housing is longer than a regular starter. I've run into this on several applications.

Just my luck. What about a May 69 420? Would this be an acceptable replacement date? I think I know the answer but I thought I'd ask anyway. :-\ Seems to me a replacement date should fall within 3wks to not more than 2 months after the bulletin. Any thoughts?

No idea about that. Best to let the heavy weights get in on the tech bulletins and dates. I'll keep my eye open for a core on a 420.

The April 69 starter has been there for quite sometime.

I really like the May 69 starter. It popped up a couple days ago & really got my attention. I think I'll hold off until the heavy weights weigh in, or better yet...JUDGES... WHERE ARE YOU ???. My take is that no one can estimate when, or even if a car owner went to a dealership to honor such a bulletin/recall. Which means just about any date within reason would work after December 23, 1968 as long as the owner has in his or her possesion a copy of the TSB for judged purposes. Any thoughts ???

This was not a recall, and owners had no knowledge of TSB's; TSB's just notified the dealers of potential field complaint issues and suggested a fix for them if they got a customer complaint.

Thanks for explaining the meaning of TSB's. I think this reinforces what I stated earlier in that it would be difficult for anyone to dispute a reasonable replacement starter date with regards to the 8420 if a person opts to go that route. However, I am in communications with a savvy retired engineer who might have the answer for modifying the 8361 so that it works like it was intended to.

I checked into this Dan...this high torque modification will not alter the exterior configuration of the 8361.
