What are the colors of each wiring harness tag?
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:59:47 PM »
Does anyone know what the original wiring harness tag colors were for each of the various harnesses on First Gen Camaros?  Here are the tag colors that I know of so far:

-A/C wiring harness tag was light blue.
-Rear (trunk) wiring harness tag was white and located near left rear side marker light.
-Intermediate wiring harness tag was orange and located under the dash.

I need the following harness tag colors:
-Front light/alternator harness.
-Engine harness.
-Under dash harness.
-Powered convertible top harness.

Each tag had three thin arrows grouped together that fanned out (one bent 90 degrees to the left, one was straight, and one bent 90 degrees to the right) and the last 4 numbers of the GM part number.

Yes, for my car, unless someone else has already done it.  In that case, I'd like to get their contact info so I can get some made. I was hoping other CRG members might have one or more original tags on their rides and could contribute to my research.

Here's a picture of the engine and light harness off my 28K mile 69 Z. Printed tag was kind of lime green and an orange spray spot on the other one. I made a new tag using MS Word and wrapped it in clear tape when done. I can't find the .doc right now, I'll keep looking.

Are the numbers for date coding or are they used in place of part numbers in the factory? I have a NOS under dash harness with fuse block in the box, but it is NOT for a camaro. I think it is for a chevy truck, '67 style, but am not sure. I bought it for $25 to use for parts to repair my harness, but have not gotten around to that yet. I don't have access to it right now, but I MIGHT be able to grab it this weekend if you think anything on it would help you.

Attached is the codes on the tag I recreated with Word. I don't think this is a date code, car is 5A with console.

The numbers on the tag are the last four numbers of the GM part number of the harness.  Each harness had a different color...most likely to ease identification on the assembly line.

I was told once that the reason most parts were color coded was because many of the assembly line workers at the time could not read.

Anyone have any idea if someone has a handle on what these codes could have been for our cars (what tags were on what wire combos) ?  Eg.  My 68 z had no options but an AM radio.  No console no gauges non rs.  I would like to find what tags should have been on what wires too.

Dusk Blue Z,

Your tag number "7602" decodes as Group 2.525: "Harness, Engine Wiring, 6297602, 1968/8 cyl with console gauges / SUP 6295217".  I checked my Chevrolet Parts History Index, and 6297602 superseded 6295217 on 2/69.  Now, we all know that the engine wiring harness was lime green.  I guess they used an excess 1968 engine harness on your 69Z?  Was it an early 69 build date?

68Zproject, here you go based on the data you gave above:

Group 2.525, Engine wiring harness, 6297638, Tag "7638", Tag Color = Lime green.
Group 2.480, Forward lamp and Delcotron wiring harness, 6295058, Tag "5058", Tag Color = unknown.
Group 2.480, Instrument Panel Wiring Harness, 6295244 (superseded 6295060 on 11/68), Tag "5244" or "5060" (as applicable by date), Tag Color = unknown.
Group 13.090, Body wiring harness, 7720067, Tag "0067", Tag Color = White.

Bowtie,

My car has a 5A build date.

"I checked my Chevrolet Parts History Index, and 6297602 superseded 6295217 on 2/69.  Now, we all know that the engine wiring harness was lime green."

I read from your quote that the 6297602 harness superseded the 6295217 on 2/69 which would make sense on my car, and make the 6295217 harness the earlier one.

I know my rear light harness has a White tag as others had mentioned, but I don't think I would say all the engine harnesses were Lime Green from just one example. I would like to hear what others had found on their cars.

2/69 was still the 1968 Model Year, though, and was a late change...close to the August 1969 beginning of the 69 Model Year.   My parts manual lists 6297602 (& the superseded 6295217) as being for a 1968, not a 1969.  It lists 6297639 as being for "1969/8 cyl with console gauges".  It seems like the assembly line installed a left-over 1968 harness on your early 69 build car.  I'm sure they don't waste the excess harnesses if they'll still fit the next model year.

If you car was a 5A build date in 1969, I would have thought it would have been a 1968 Model?
