68 idiot lights
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:38:14 AM »
What does the end look like originally for the green wire that goes to the temp sender on the head?  Pictures would really help.  I'm in the process of putting my gauge car back to idiot lights and have the end on the green wire for the gauge type temp sender.

I have no idea if the 68 idiot lights differ from the 69, or even if this pic will help, but here it is anyway. It probably isn't even the end you are inquiring about but maybe others will chime in...good luck.

Which end on the sender looks like the way it came from the factory?

Thanks, I still have one of those.  I'll have to check and make sure it's the open or closed type though.

Does the connector have the plastic end with a slot in it like the picture with the silver looking sender?

Sender # 01513321 is correct

Only for a car with gauges - I think he's going back to idiot lights, which uses a "switch", not a variable-resistance (thermistor) sending unit.

My car with gauges and has that unit.  It's a 1969, but I don't think they changed.

I guess I should read a little slower so I can comprehend what the question is.  ::)  My bad !!

My 68 with gauges uses 6400759 as called out in the AIM...  AIM says either 1993426 or 6488708 (opt.) for lights in 68.  Picture in the AIM shows a blade/spade type connector like the far right one in the above picture.

As long as the end looks like 01513321.  I have one that looks like that and I will check to see if it works as "open"," closed".  The one Lectric Ltd. sells a s a "correct" one has a spade end on it and I didn't think that was the way they came originally.

From the other AIMs:

67 AIM:
1993369              Picture is of no help.  But no washer or nut.
6402666   (opt)
1513321   U17     No picture at all.

69 AIM:
6489356              Shows a pin type fitting.
1993369   (opt)    Wierd that it is now the option...
1513462   U17      Shows a washer and nut to hold on a ring.  Makes sense...

The pic on the left is for the 'idiot light' I am very sure......

Well, my AIM shows a spade connector for both the gauge and non-gauge connectors and I don't rally trust the AIM pics.  So anyone have an original idiot light 68 that can say what the end of the temp sender is supposed to look like for sure?  The research and info I came up with for getting the right gauge sender said, that one had a pin end and that's what the wire connector came with from AAW.  Does the idiot light sender have the flat knob end or a spade end?

My 68 BB 396 Car has a spade style on it. (Warning Light Equipt'd)
Interesting the end of the green wire has what appears to be a larger Molded connector on it.

Well, as usual things aren't that easy to "pin" down.  Pun not intended.  I've seen an end like that but I think it was for the oil pressure sending unit. This is what I was told the gauge sender and hook up was supposed to be.

Yes, I hear ya.
This is the way my 68 is, Could it be a BB -vs- SB thing?
The wire is dark green & 20 gage, with orig loom cover.
80k miles. Car has been worked on over the years but the harness is very orig.
After study'g the AIM it gets very confusing and the pics seem to look more like your pin connector.

Other than someone with an untouched 68Z (Jerry) or other small block that can definitely say what the idiot light sender and connector looks like, I'll have to try and see if there is something locally to look at.

That's with gauges though right?  That's what mine has but it isn't right so I'm going back to idiot lights which is why I wanted to nail down what the original sender looked like for idiot lights.

Yes.  I have gauges.  It's not right for gauges?  I'll have to bust out my cooking pot and heat up some water and see what happens to it...

That pic of mine is correct for gauges.  They didn't come on my car originally so I'm going back to idiot lights but don't know what they had for a sender.
