But you're correct, there's adapters to convert them to a 3-series.

And a series 3 is good for what gears? Is the adaptor strong enough to handle serious abuse? 4-500 hp and slicks at times.

A 3-series carrier is for gears up to a 3.90:1; 4.10 and up requires a 4-series carrier.

I have a 3 series carrier with a spacer ring and GM 456 gears. Came out of my L48 when I put in my new 342 "street gears". I don't know if the spacer ring of this type would work in your housing. My POP says my car came with 331 gears and I assume the gears were changed at the dealer when delivery took place?
