Jim King Chevrolet
« on: January 22, 2011, 05:12:22 AM »
Does anyone have pictures or information on JIM KING CHEVROLET, MILWAUKEE, WI. My latest purchase was sold new at this Dealership and I can't find any significant information online. I know they closed their doors in 1981.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes, I bought my 77 Camaro new there. I lived only a mile away at the time. The original building is still there.
They closed and I believe they were bought out by Braeger Chevrolet(still in business).

Just curious... where are you located?

Fred, thanks for the extra info. do you have any pics of the old Dealership? I did google map the address and saw the brick building and show room were still there.

I live in a suburb of Vancouver, BC, Canada.

I grew up a few miles from there and bought my first '69 Z/28 off their used car lot in '75. The showroom and service building are still there and appear as they did but the used car lot was sold years ago and now has a building. Very small neighborhood store; sold very few performance cars.
Learning more and more about less and less...

I just remembered I have a '69 warranty folder from Jim King. Is the car a '69?

J. B. King co-founded King Braeger Chevrolet in 1923 with Oscar Braeger. The dealership was located at 1802 W. Forest Home Avenue in Milwaukee. The partnership was terminated in 1947 with Braeger taking over 100% ownership. Braeger opened a new facility at 4100 S. 27th Street on Milwaukee's south side in 1966, dropping "King" from the dealership name. That dealership is still in business today.

It appears that some time in the early 50's, the King family built Jim King Chevrolet at 3045 S. Kinnickinnic Ave in the Bay View area of Milwaukee. That dealership closed its doors for good in the early 1980's. The building presently houses Pro Comp Auto Body.

Glad to help out. I grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and worked at Braeger during my college years from 84-91, so I've always had an interest in Milwaukee-area car dealer history.
