68 Camaro deluxe steering horn shroud
« on: May 16, 2006, 02:36:01 AM »
Were the side skirts of the 68 deluxe steering shroud painted or chrome?
Did any 68's come with wood accents applied to the horn button tops and the middle of the vertical arm?

???  What do you mean by "side skirts"?  I have an original/unrestored '68 deluxe steering wheel.  It's mostly black with very thin chrome accents lines.  I'll take a pic and post it next time I'm out in the garage.

I've never seen one with the wood accents you described.

The original 68 deluxe steering wheels matched the rest of the interior.  Most of the repos for sale today do not look like the real 68 deluxe wheel.
The 69s were the ones with the wood accents.
Here are some pictures: (1 GM file, 2 ebay file, 3 mine, 4 69 ebay file)

BTW, in 68 I know the deluxe wheel came in black, gold, red, turquoise, and blue.  The part # for a deluxe black one was 9747536.

Thanks for that, I thought the black all over except for the thin rasied ridge was correct. Mine currently has just the top textured part in black with the rest in chrome.

A previous owner must have stripped the old worn paint off and decided that the exposed chrome underneath looked good, putting only the textured part back under satin black paint.
That owner may have also added the thin wood veneer's to the horn button tops and a long strip down the centre of the vertical arm betwen the thin chrome highlights.
The overall effect they achieved is really quite pleasing, matching in very nicely with the other woodgrain accents on the dash centre and console...oops, I mean 'Seat Seperator' ...lol   :)

I have another shroud correctly painted so I may leave that one as it is.

Those surfaces that are at right angles to the top, receeding towards the dash.
