67 rearend in a 68 ?
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:14:48 AM »
Please bare with me new to this great site.  I have a 68 Nov. build RS.  Can a 67 PA 0329GI rearend be used without any modifications? The 68 has multileaf sgrings.  The rearend in it now is a later one with 4.56 gears. Do not have the info. on the rearend yet.  Want to make it a more streetable car.  If there is modifications to be made what are they?   Thanks Allen

My interchange book groups a first gen axle housings together. The only distinction is between 10 bolt and 12 bolt. It shows both will exchange from: 67-69 Camaro, 68-71 Nova, 71 Ventura.

Yes it will fit fine. The only thing to be aware of is that the 67 would originally have single leaf perches (unless they have been changed) I believe and you stated your 68 had multi-leaf springs. The single leaf perches will be shallower and will require either changing them or mounting the rear end with U bolts rather than the factory bolts. The other thing to look for is that the back spacing on your rear wheels wasn't off set to compensate for the width difference in the later rearend. What's wrong with .56s, pretty fun street gear - especially with a 4 speed.

Good luck, Kevin

Thanks guys   I now know what to look for before changing the rearend.   Yes the 56"s are fun with a 4-speed and 425 hp. Have to decode the rearend in it to see about wheel spacing.   Thanks again ALLEN

You will have to change the spring perches or make some spacers to go between the top spring and the perch to make that rear work in your car. The center bolt in the multi-leaf springs will not sit in the spring perch for a mono-leaf so you have to install a spacer to get the clearance. I have used pieces of old springs as spacers, or you can make them out of 5/16" steel cut to the same width as the springs. I don't have the dimensions for the length but I make them the length of the rubber spring pad. You will not use the upper pad, but you can still use the lower mounting pad between the bottom of the spring and top of the shock plate. Use 4 u-bolts to hold the axle in place instead of the factory way of 2 u-bolts and 4 T-bolts. I have done this swap many times before and that is the only issue I have run into...............RatPack.........................

Just keep livin......L I V I N .............

There must be a reason you need to change the whole housing, if not a higher ratio ring and pinion seems to be the ticket.
