How is the original spare tire mounted?

Hi!
I want to see pics of an original trunk mounted spare wheel so I know how restore as correct as possible while I´m at it!  ;)
I don´t have my POP or other documents to see how my car original was equipped so I just want to see what´s most likely to have been there....

I don´t have a bumper jack so I was thinkin of turning the spare wheel up side down as shown in your pic John!  :P
When you have a repainted Hugger orange steel wheel and a brand new RWL Goor Year tire I think it´s a shame not to show it!  8)

What du You think about that guys, to far from originality or what?

The hold-down J-bolt probably isn't long enough with the wheel face side up.

What John said, but I've seen REALLY long J-bolts at Auto Zone, Pep Boys, etc... If you're not worried about originality, then you can go that route.

Or you could extend it with a turnbuckle, and some threaded rod.

 You could buy a jack. I have a spare except the base. They're easy to come by on eBay. I've just been to lazy or sick to get around to buying one.

If you must replace your trunk pan due to rust, hang onto the original pan and check it carefully for where the original spare tire hold-down loop was welded to the pan.  There may be some dimples in the new sheet metal pan to help locate the loop back in its original location.  If you are not able to do this, others on this site with original unrestored cars can measure from some designated datum points in the trunk pan, exactly where to locate the loop.  This will be important to properly locate a full size spare tire.

Also, if the trunk pan is replaced, remember to transfer to the new panel the fuel sending unit wire clip (see picture), spot welded to the exterior side of the hump, just inside the flip-down license plate fuel door, on the passenger side.

AMP Products has NOS and/or very good reproduction hardware, including the J-Bolt #B-11673 (about $8) and Wing Nut #B-10612 (about $6).  Check them out at www.ampproducts.com.

Thanx for info Dave, but my trunk floor is ok and the loop is in place!
..it looks to be seated in the right place but I don´t know if it´s the original one or a repro!?

A nother quest that popped up - How is an original steel wheel painted on the inside? I have Hugger orange all over the wheel both inside and outside, should it be black on the inside like yours John or ....?  ???

^^ Only the outside of the wheel was painted body color.  The inside was left in black primer and will show some overspray of body color.

That’s good you still have your original trunk pan. Attached is a picture my trunk pan loop.  It was transferred from my original pan when my trunk pan was replaced.

jeff68 is correct about the wheel color overspray in the backside surface of the wheel.  Look closely at JohnZ's picture which shows the overspray thru the open slots in his Rally Wheel rim. 

The back sides of the rims were painted about 30 - 60 percent gloss (satin gloss) black.  Jerry MacNeish’s ’69 Camaro fact book recommended Rustoleum “Satin-Black” #7777 which is about 40-45 percent gloss, or Krylon #1613 which is about 30 percent gloss black, for good results on budget restorations.  I used the Rustoleum Satin-Black on my rims which you can see in the picture attached, that closely matched original survivor rims I have look at.

With the tire on! And as you see, the J-rod from OEM were long enough to put the wheel upside down! :)

Huggers orange car, he decided to mount it with the letters up, and go through a stud hole.

Mine is a custom thing but it looks far better in the trunk, in my opinion!  8)
