D80 Rear Spoiler Dealer Install?
« on: November 07, 2010, 05:04:10 PM »
Quick question regarding the D80 rear spoiler... My 69 SS350 has a rear spoiler (fiberglass), but does not have the front spoiler, nor does it have the required hole in the front support to attach the necessary brace.  So I am wondering:

1.  I'm sure there was a dealer installed D80 package... would they just install the rear and not the front?

I know of no "dealer-installed" D80 package. They were never serviced in kit form.

It was very common back in the day to add a rear spoiler. Factory built D80 cars have 1 thicker torsion rod on the trunk lid hinges to compensate for the added weight of the spoiler.

William... I obviously assumed wrong about the dealerships being able to install a D80 package.  Interesting.

I don't think my car has the thick torsion rod you mention, so at some point someone added the rear spoiler then.  I am restoring the car and trying to keep it as original as possible.  I will probably remove the spoiler and not replace it then since it didn't come from the factory... event though I like the look.  Thanks for the info.

Many years ago we managed to acquire ZL-1 #4. Here's a photo of the car taken sometime early in 1970. Note they added both spoilers. None of Gibbs ZL-1s were built with them.

To clarify - lots of dealers installed spoilers, but they had to order the parts individually; there was no "kit" they could order that had all the parts. You could probably count on one hand the number of those thousands of dealer or owner installations that included the larger-diameter torsion rod.

69 Z I am restoring right now was ordered with the spoiler and rear ant... the ant kicked the D80 out, the original owner had the dealer add one with-in 2 weeks.

I found the thicker rod for sale from a firebird supplier. I will probably get one eventually.

The early '69 models had the shorter deck spoiler. Was the thicker torsion rod added to these as well?

One other thing I noticed about the spoiler on my car was that it was fiberglass.  Was this standard for the time?

Yes. All factory D80 cars had the thicker torsion rod.

I read somewhere in another thread that the deck lid was stamped at the factory. If this is correct can you tell me where the stamp is located and if this stamp dates the lid? Again...its a 12A Van Nuys build.

Thanks John

Sorry Spicoli, didn't mean to hijack your thread but maybe all of us can benefit from this...

Petes L48, I am familiar with CRG's shtml sheet and the thread you posted...

I am trying to figure out when the deck lid was made and if it is consistant with the build date of the car {12A; 1st wk of Dec., '68}. If there is suppose to be a date/code stamp...where is it located? This is obviously important, before I can determine wether or not the car came with the D80 option, I need to make certain it has the factory lid.

On the thread you posted, John was able to give out this information just with the pics so I am hoping he can do the same here.

Those rods look equal to me = not a D80 car.
Date is on the center rib of the lid.

I agree, the torsion bars look identical. It doesn't surprise me that it isn't a D80 car. If you recall J also mentioned it is a strip delete car. These two discoveries are consistant with a conservative look. I think this also raises a red flag on the front spoiler. It does not have the main frame anchor point.

The other dilemma I'm up against is the hood, its a repop. Was it possible to order a plain hood on a SS car? If it was I think Pat would have opted for this as well. Nothing on the car is consistant with what a guy would have ordered.

I could not find a stamp on the center rib/ribs of the lid. The paint was laid on pretty thick so maybe it's just covered up. Other than the stamp is there any other way to determine if its factory? Are all 1st gen lids interchangeable?

Just trying to piece these last few items together as best I can. Its been tough without the build sheet.

Thanks Kurt

The blue lid in the photo is the '69 "second design" lid - same one that's on my car; has the four holes in the inner panel to clear the attaching studs for the Firebird spoiler. Photo below is mine - the Fisher "run number" (date code) is directly below the jack instruction sticker, on the raised rib; you can't read it in the photo, but you can see it if you look closely. They moved it on the later 3rd design lid.

There is obviously a visual distinction between the two. It certainly looks like the torsion rods are original to the car. If you look close, the spatter paint line would be hard to duplicate. No rear spoiler...what was this girl thinking ???!

Thanks for the pic John

I see it on my lid now... unfortunately there is so much paint that the stamp looks like a blur. I didn't know there were three different designs, thanks! Can you tell me which of the three is correct for a 12A Van Nuys build? Not sure if it really matters where it was built...?

Thanks John

It appears that the 2nd-design deck lid was used between about November '68 to April '69.

My 1969 05A Norwood Camaro appears to have the 2nd design (with the four holes in the inner panel). The inner panel is stamped "T A10" in raised rib, to right of the jack instructions, and "A10" in a second spot along the middle bottom of the raised rib.

If I recall correctly, the T is the stamping plant, and stamping plant codes are typically H, K and T.  Has it been determined which plants these codes stood for?

The “A10” stands for the 10th week of 1969 which would be the week of March 10th, correct?

That's the "third design" deck lid (date code relocated, no weld tabs on the rear hem flange); it was used from about March to the end of the model year. I don't think the plant codes have been decoded, except for Kalamazoo ("K").

Yes - see photo below; the second design '69 deck lid had eight of them across the rear edge.
