Google "Arthur Gould Rebuilders" in New York - turns them around in 3 days or less for about $65.00.

While checking all my numbers on motor parts I realized that the water pump on this engine was a 3953892. All the notes that I have found so far list a pump with the number 3953692. I started looking for the 892 with not much luck. What is the different  applications of the two?

No such thing as a 3953892 pump - what looks like an 8 is actually a 6.

If you decide to rebuild it, make sure you DON'T support the pump on the "legs" when you've got it in the press, or you'll end up with a two-piece pump.  :-[

Rebuild it yourself, it's easy!  Here's the step by step procedure with photos...

Regarding the water pump rebuild kit. Purchased one from Zip. Had a machinist friend help me at his shop. He had a good press and the knowledge. This should not be that hard to do, especially with an experienced machinist. Used the instructions on the Corvette Magazine site. The repair kit did not come with instruction. Took our time and read the instructions carefully, but when we pressed the seal on there was no clearance and the shaft would not turn. Was able to remove the seal without damaging the shaft or housing. Called Zip to see if they would sell another seal. Was informed they did not offer just the seal. Been checking for a source for another seal. All of the chain stores don't carry them. Don't know what we did wrong, but I have $50.00 in a kit I can't use and a pump that is halfway build. My machinist friend questioned some of the instructions(probably went against his experience), but I wanted to follow them as written. Appreciate if anyone has suggestions. Seal shows # 262714.

I assume by 'shaft' you mean the shaft within the bearing assembly. Is the bearing assembly pressed in where the front of the bearing is flush with the opening of the water pump? Did your kit come with a 1-piece of 2-piece shaft seal?

The bearing assembly was pressed in flush with the opening per the instructions. The seal does seem to be a 1 piece unit.

This video shows the proper way to install the 1-piece seal using a two step process:

Video looks like what we did. I still need to find a source for the shaft seal and find out what we did wrong.

LI Corvette sells them.

Did you check eBay? I know the BBC seals are on there.
Does the replacement shaft length look the same as the one removed?
