68 327 RS air cleaner assy
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:13:25 PM »
Hello all! Trying to locate an original 68 RS 327/275hp (automatic trans) air cleaner assy. I found a few on Ebay, but most claim they fit several years. Are 68 & 69 the same? Did all the automatics have the thermo valve or smooth snorkel? Looking for any guidance that can be offered. This way I know what I should be trying to hunt down. Thank you!

A spare air cleaner that I have hanging on the wall in the garage may be for a '68 327/210 application.  Definitely the 2Bbl not the 4Bbl air cleaner though.

Also, 68 and 69 have different snorkel orientations; at least for the 327/210.  In '69 air cleaner snorkel ifor 327/210 hp s oriented toward the passenger side.  In '68, I believe it was oriented toward the driver side.

Attached pic is a '69 327/210 2Bbl carb setup.

Sweet job on the engine Rich. That things looks awesome! Ok, so I need to look for an air cleaner with the Thermo valve and the snorkel pointing towards the drivers side, and for 275hp so that it will for the 4bbl. With that being said, would 68' & 69' be the same? I'm surprised that they dont sell these aftermarket. That's ok because I'd rather have an original GM anyway.

Hi,

This auction, I am not affiliated with it in anyway, seems to have the correct air cleaner for a 327/275 hp engine.  The air cleaner lid is more raised.  I just can't tell if the snorkel is oriented the correct way.

This is the style that was on my late production 68, though I can't be certain it was the original..

I saw that one on Ebay and contacted the seller about it. He doesn't have the part number and claims it's from a 69' Camaro. I just wasn't sure 68 and 69 were the same. If I'm going to buy one and restore it, I wanted to be sure it was the correct one. Thanks for the heads up on the auction! Anyone know if these two years are the same?

Hey,

I don't think they offered a 4bc 327 in 1969.  the part number for the air cleaner you are looking for is, 6484220-A.  That part number was used in passenger, chevy II, chevelle and Camaro's.  The same part, excluding the heat riser valve was used in manual transmission cars in 68.  1969 Chevy's did not use the same part number.

Ok... So now that I know what is correct, I just bought an air cleaner assy on Ebay. It's needs a complete bead blast and repaint, which is fine. But, now my next question would be, what is the exact finish paint should I use. Semi-gloss, underhood black?
