Date code on '67 Steering Gear box
« on: October 29, 2010, 03:59:51 AM »
I am restoring a LOS 11A build '67 Coupe.  I have found and decoded many of the correct date codes.  I am now in the process of cleaning up and restoring the P. Steering Gear box.  I found the date code stamped on the aluminum cover on top, it is 276 6 (I will attach picture).  I went to a 1966 Julian calendar and figured out that day 276 was a Sunday, could that be right?

Are you sure? I get Monday October 3 1966. Which falls in line with your 11A ( first week November) build.

Hey Mike! A bit off the topic, but I'm looking to freshen up the steering box on my 68' as well, and was wondering what you used to strip/clean yours. What finish are you going to restore it to? Black, silver? Thanks! Kevin

Not to HiJack this thread I hope - but this exchange got me thinking about what I had noted a few years back on my '68 Z'ed steering box when I got interested in searching for numbers on everything in and under my car...
My notes as good or poor as they are, show my steering box as having a B0308 stamped on it. According to what I have seen there shouldn't be any alfa characters involved but excluding that (if that is possible) does the 0308 part subscribe to the 30th day of 1968 which would make it a late January part and fit with my 02D build date? Does or would the B prefix have any validity at all in any of this in anyone's opinion?
I am unfortunately at the end of my rope in trying to find a standard steering Z/28 specific Pitman and idler for this car to relace my badly worn originals - but at least it appears unless I am told otherwise, that this is the original box which is apparently still in excellent condition...

Thanks for any and all input - Randy

rskev> The box was painted black over rust, so I started with Zip Strip paint remover.  Then several times of spraying on Muratic acid, followed by Krud Kutter , a Must for Rust, rust remover.  The nice thing about the Krud Kutter, a Must for Rust, is you don't rinse it off.  Allow it to Sun dry or wipe it dry with old rags, it leaves some kind of coating that inhibits the part from quickly surface rusting again.  It can be wire brushed and painted over.  I intend to paint the box with Cast Blast, the box is supposed to be natural cast finish.  The top cover (Aluminum), and the round front cover also (Aluminum) should be left natural.

Thanks Kurt - I should have looked a bit harder and would not have had to bother anyone with my question I guess... - Randy
