69 Camaro big block oil line for gauges
« on: May 08, 2006, 02:42:34 AM »
I am currently looking for an original oil line setup ( for gauges ) for my SS Camaro.  I have the original brass fitting that screws into
the block ( above the oil filter ) and an additional piece screwed into that brass fitting ( SEE IMAGE ).  I need to know what the
remainder of the original components look like.  Is the oil line copper, or plastic?

Can anyone post an image of an original BB oil line ( complete if posible )?

Thanks,
Steve

I have a 68 396 matching numbers, the angled adapter is similar to mine, slightly different shape and the oil line is black plastic which loops up through a grommeted hole in the firewall just behind the coil.
If I remember rightly, both ends of the oil line have the same brass ferrule and nut.
Will clean mine up and post a pic [bit oily atm  :)  ]

here's some pics of mine, seems to be some logo on the brass line fitting at the motor end.
Pulled the guages out so I could get a pic of that end for you.

Steve: The brass one piece fitting with the 45 degree angle looks right. I have an NOS line I found in the early 80"s and if I can get my son to help me load some digital pictures I will. It has a metal line that goes from that fitting to a bracket (only piece I do not own) that bolts to the head. From there it is the black nylon line to the guage. The drawing in the AIM is pretty good.

The fittings at the BB engine end shown in the photos above are aftermarket compression sleeve fittings. The original fitting that was screwed into the brass elbow and the mating fitting that went on the oil pipe are shown in the photo below; GM used their own proprietary fitting design that didn't use a separate compression sleeve - it used specially tapered male and female fittings that captured and sealed the pipe when the fitting was tightened. Paragon has the GM female fitting that screws into the elbow (their #34), and the matching GM male fitting that goes on the pipe is supplied with their oil line kits - they may sell the fittings separately.

The original pipe was copper?? or have you used that just for illustration purposes?

The pipe in the photo is for a Corvette, which used steel or copper-plated steel; the same fitting design was used with metal or nylon tubing (the nylon tubing had a tiny brass insert in the end that kept it from collapsing when the fitting was tightened).  Paragon's site is www.corvette-paragon.com .

John,

I'm almost positive that the original image I posted of my oil fitting is original.  Do you agree?

So, was the oil line for the 69 Camaro ( 396 ) copper, or plastic?  I'm still confused......

I agree that the 45* elbow fitting is original, but the steel double-male adapter fitting screwed into it is not; if you'lll look in the Assembly Manual, section U17, Sheet A3, View "D", you'll see the nut (item 14) and the sleeve (item 13) - those are the two parts shown in the front of the photo I posted.

I've never owned a BB Camaro, but I think the original oil line was nylon (as were all the small-blocks) due to the complex routing to the gauge in the console.

I finally found time to post this. The large brass fitting that screws into the block I bought used. The brass reducer was bought NOS from Irv Schroeder Chevrolet-Hillsboro KS in the early 80's. Notice how the reduction looks smaller on mine than yours. The steel line, brass connector, nylon line was purchased as 1 unit from the same dealership on a differant transaction. As I recall it took awhile to get as I think it was sourced from another dealership out of Canada.  The only piece I am missing is the bracket that bolts along the top edge of the block or bottom edge of the head ( I can't remember which is right) It has an open ended slot and the nut on the connector tightens against it.
Hope this helps.

Hey Camaro Cat!

Thanks for the post of the detailed images.  Just what I was after.  Now, can I ask you to take some close-up images of the
fittings and the short line so I can see exactly what I am after?  Also, is the longer line ( that runs through the firewall and
connects to the gauges ) copper, or plastic?

BTW, that bracket you are after in made in reproduction.  I believe Paragon makes it.  I have one here somewhere........

Rick's Camaro has all the correct parts on page 116 of their new 2006 catalog.

The line is plastic. *Never* run copper oil or fuel lines. They work harden and break.....

Been there, done that......
