.
John, what did the paint shop do to prevent paint from getting on the latch itself?

Nothing. The latch had oil/grease on it, and what little paint got on it soon fell off after a few open/close cycles.

While we are on this topic, I forgot to mention that the door striker and related shim washers (if required during alignment) were also installed prior paint, thus painted body color when the door jams were painted.

Thanks Dave...I have buffed and polished several trim pieces on my car.  The car has had one repaint.  What I've noticed is, if the paint is second-repaint it comes off readily with light buffing.  If it is the original paint it will not.  The paint on the striker washers is the original paint.  The paint on the striker has been removed by normal ware.  This is a Van Nuys car.
