I notice your bolt drops in from the top & a nut is added. On my 69Z10 the subframe is treaded & the bolt just screws in to the frame to hold the spoiler bracket on?

That's not typical of factory production - they didn't use a self-tapping screw.

There were NO drilled and tapped holes created anywhere in the assembly plant, and if self-tapping screws had been used in that metal thckness, they would have been FINE thread (5/16"-24). Thousands of spoilers have been added (or replaced), and ALL of the "kits" the vendors sell for attaching them are wrong.

Mine has not been replaced. Its a real 04C Z/28,with the original sub frame. This time period included D80. The hole is too small for a 5/16 bolt to slip through and use a nut. A zip screw is a lot faster to install than a bolt, lock washer and nut. Maybe someone realized this since it is only holding a piece of plastic?  ???

Mine is 12C and I remember it to be a 5/16 hole, definitely a screw in from the bottom not a bolt and nut situation.

Spoilers were optional on Z28's up to approximately April 69. They were then included in the Z28 package.

Why did they start stamping D-80 in the trim tag in may 69 when other options such as am/fm or engines  such as L-78 weren't ? Plus it wasn't stamped in earlier production cars (04and prior) when it wasn't a mandatory option?-why?.

Codes stamped on the trim tag were only for Fisher Body information; if an option didn't directly affect how the body was built, painted and trimmed, it wasn't on the trim tag - Chevrolet never looked at it. Incorporation of coding on the trim tag was up to the local Fisher Body plant production control department for their own convenience; that's why trim tag coding was different between Norwood and Van Nuys.

My 04C has no D80 on the tag but D80 was mandatory in this time period.

I was told years ago that if you bumped a curb with the spoiler that the support rods would do a number on the sheetmetal- bend fender? seemed to make sense to me so I had never installed the rods fearing this. had thought about using nylon bolts that would break away saving the sheet metal- any thoughts on this? I will be driving my car and I'm carefull but you know "stuff" happens

We theorize it is because of the different deck lid design required by the phasing in of the Firebird Trans Am production at Norwood.
Here is the CRG research Report on the Subject.
