How many CRG team members have a 68 Z/28?
« on: July 10, 2010, 10:19:47 AM »
I found out rather quickly that several members have 68 Z/28's with the question I had concerning date code on our distributor. But how many more are out there? I thought it might be both cool and possibly beneficial to know how many CRG team members here have a 68 Z/28 and when was it built. And any neat characteristics your Z/28 might have.
Our 68 is a 01B built Butternut Yellow/Blk std interior Z/28 with born with engine, trans, and rear.  Interesting note: Found the original owner through a 1972 charge slip that was under the carpet where the carpet folds over under the seat. Car was purchased at Roger Dean Chevrolet in Charleston, WV in late March/early April, 68. Shows you people were not standing in lines to buy these at the time either  ;D

I have three.  My favorite year for sure.  Also, 1968 was the most successful model for racing endeavors too.  Both in Trans Am and NHRA thanks to D. Strickler and M. Donahue.

Check out my signature.....was originally purchased in August of '68 at Jay Chevrolet in Sweetwater, Texas.  The owner bought it for his wife who then drove it for 30,000 miles. Owner traded if for a Cadillac in '72 at a car lot in Abilene, Texas, 50 miles away. I happened to be in that city and drove by the lot and there it sat....I had to have it so I traded my '67 Impala SS for it.  Brought it back to Sweetwater and it has been here since.

Another little tidbit....the original owners wife had an add-on air conditioner installed....believe it or not.

I didn't add this on Team Camaro, so I'll add it here in case you want to know. The car was sold new at Crawford Chevrolet in Slaton Texas.

68 Z28 05D.  I've got the original owners manual with a POP, but the dealers info and owners info were cut off of it.  Mine was about as plain as they come.  Had a heater and an AM radio.  Other than the stripes and wheels, you wouldn't know it from a  6 cyl. plain Jane.

Nothing wrong with that but many of us are very glad they had stripes.........  If anyone is interested this is what we have in 68 Z's over there. And yes, a few are the same as listed here.

1968 Z28, 03A, matador red, spoilers, interior and exterior trim groups, console/gauges and am radio.  It has the original engine, tranny, rear-end and most other parts.  My Dad purchased it used in March of 1970 with 29,970 miles after his 2nd trip to Vietnam in Jacksonville, Florida.  I have the original owners name, but have not been successful in finding him.  I was 7 years old when he got the Z and basically grew up in the car.  It spent 3 years in Germany on the Autobahn...it always got a lot of stares when traveling over there!

Just sold original paint 06c born with engine/trans/rear to a friend. There is no question about it a 68z/28 is my favorite muscle car on the planet! John

68CamaroZ28  you probably have but did you know about this site?
http://www.1968z28.com/

It has a registry for 68 Z's and if you contact the site owner they might be able to help with how many still exist. They do have some data but the site has not been updated since 06, still interesting though.  :)

Not only is the '68 Z/28 the most successful first generation Z/28 in racing history as well as the favorite Z/28 for many, but it's one of the rarest muscle cars when you take into account Pete Estes '68 Z/28 convertible.  Also, the '68 Z/28 with the Rally Sport option is the sexiest Camaro ever built!

I was not aware that the above website was still in operation but glad it is. Noticed too it has been idle (no updates for years) which helped me assume it was dead.
