rear bumper brackets
« on: June 13, 2010, 01:01:18 PM »
I'm installing the rear bumper on my newly painted 68 and I'm looking for a way to mount the brackets to the painted surface without ruining the paint. I'm thinking about making rubber gaskets or maybe using gasket paper between the surfaces but it occurs to me that if the material I use causes the seam to hold moisture I'll do more harm than good.

My question - did GM use any gaskets here? Is it best to just bolt it together metal to metal? I'd love to hear some opinions on this.

No gaskets from factory. It's not metal to metal. The surfaces are painted so it's protected. More so if epoxy was use prior to paint as it should have been. My car and others see mother nature often and I have zero rust issues in that area. Any bracket bolted tightly to a painted body panel is going to ruin the paint to some degree. But if the paint integrity is not compromised to expose bare metal, corrosion is of no concern.

Sauron327:

Yes it is epoxy primer, primer, BC/CC. I'm just concerned about crushing the paint. I think that sometimes I think too much but it doesn't hurt any to ask.

I made some rubber gaskets or o-rings for just about every part that bolted to the body. But thats just me,if you feel better then do it !! Good luck
