« on: June 10, 2010, 02:51:17 PM »
Anyone have a description of the original 67 screws #2-38?5554 that are used to hold the relay bracket asm. to the fender, shown in AIM Z22 B7?
Thanks.
Bob

If you are talking about the 2 screws that can be see from inside the engine bay on the driver's side fender. The ones I have, that were supplied by AMK, are back oxide finish. 1/4" -20 machine thread,1/2" long. Split captured washer. Hex head with three hash marks at 90 degrees from one another. With a "SS" in the 4th spot around the head. The "SS" are sharp like a lighting bolt. While not original, that is what AMK is suppling as original.

SSMUNDY,
Thanks for the reply, and yes those are the screws I am looking for, but I am trying to find the description and head markings of original screws.
You would think that with almost 65,000 RS units being built there would be a couple of originals around to get a consensus.
I am also trying Team Camaro and have had some responce but head markings are still a concern.

You cannot rely on the vendors for 100% accuracy on all bolts. Those bracket bolt washers were not origionaly captured but integral. I parted and junked an unmolested RS 4 years ago but cannot remember the exact head markings. Surely someone has a survivor for reference.

Buddy,
Do they also have three hash marks?
Is the washer captured or part of the bolt?

a captured washer will spin on the bolt, but you cannot remove it. The "part of the bolt" refers to the type of bolt that has a round, larger diameter feature below the hex head, but before the threads. Kind of like if you put a bolt through a flat washer, and then welded them together.

This is what was in my 11B LOS car, believed to be original

http://s911.photobucket.com/albums/ac316/RAP617983/Camaro/67%20RS%20relay%20bracket%20and%20bolt/?albumview=slideshow

I also included a pic of the fender which is also believed to be original.  Only has one hole, and the bracket only has one cage nut but an available square hole for a second nut.

Petes L48,
The relay bracket looks original but it is mounted incorrectly. The hole being used to mount the bracket is for the wiring harness. The factory drilled two additional holes forward of that hole. Get a copy of the 67 AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual ) and look under UPC Z22 B6 view A for the correct fender piercing. The AIM is not always completely correct but defiantly worth the $20.00 and I would suggest everyone have a copy , and even all three (67,68.69) years.

I'll have to dig out old photos before it was restored.  Thought we replaced the RH fender, not the driver side.  One is original.  One cage nut could have been lost off the bracket at some point.  Odd though, looking at Z22 B7 it looks like they only show one screw 3855554.

Look at Z22 B6 view A that shows the correct placement of the holes.
You are correct about B7, but when using the AIM, sometimes the small details in the drawings are not completely correct but it is the best we have.
Look on TC ( restoration) where I have a discussion on this same topic and there are several examples of the bracket location.
