2) What was changed? for example if the OEM block had a bad main... did the heads get swapped or was it a whole engine?  i would think it was just what was broke and everything else got reused.

"CE" replacements were furnished two ways - as an assembled short block (block, crank, rods, bearings, pistons/rings), or as a "fitted block" (block with fitted pistons). All the bolt-on parts were to be transferred from the failed engine.
