1967 L78 4P code car
« on: February 09, 2010, 06:46:00 PM »
I have just recently acquired a car that I believe is a true L78 car with the 4P code.  I was trying to find out if there is any registries for these cars.  This car no longer has the original power train.  So I am searching for any info on these cars.  Any help would be appreciated.

you need to start looking for signs of orig big block pieces. Correct motor stands  crossmember  #s on the  tags on front springs if they are there. 6k redline tach. How far do the frame mounts hang off the frame .  Orig black paint on the tail panel. If it has all this and it in the right time frame you may it may be your lucky day

It looks like the car was probably wrecked years ago and then was pretty much stripped of anything that would come off of it.  I remember seeing it sitting in a wrecking yard back in the early 80's.  The paint looks to be original and it does have the blacked out tail pan.  also has the mounting point for the radius arm along with the big block heater box.   I have known this car for years as a couple of guys I knew had it, but never built it.  always was pretty sure it was a big block but never thought about it being a 375 horse car till I took a look at the cowl tag.  I didn't realize until then that there was some of the L78 cars coded 4P until I researched it.

What do i need to do to get in contact with the registery?
thanks Ricky

Great car. Here is a new 1967 L-79 taken in front of Brooks Chevrolet, Millen, Ga. See window sicker in quarter glass. Johnny Brooks ran the car in Super Stock class and was driven by Huston Platt from Atlanta. It was never titled and sat for years after the dealership closed. It was restored and sold a few years ago. Not sure where it went or if it’s in the L-79 registry. Mr Brooks order the Capri Cream L-79 with heater delete and 4:56 gears.
He also ordered a 67 Butternut Yellow Z-28 with heater delete and 4:88 gears. I have that car now. A friend of mine purchased the Z-28 new and later sold it to another friend. It has been a drag car since 1970 with low mileage. I’m in the slow process of restoring the car now.

The Dixie Twister is Here in Kitsap Co Washington, a Local Businessman bought it recently via Large Auction, It is in the process of getting a restoration L78 motor put back in, I saw the motor and heads at a local wrench shop here in Bremerton.

Sorry a typo on the Dixie Twister,  it’s an original L-78, 4P.

Regarding SS emblems: A bb was installed in the Z-28 at some point hence SS emblem

The Dixie Twister was not a 4P.  Ignore the M22 grease pencil as someone got carried away and wasn't knowledgeable.

To Jmth52, if you are answering what a L79 is, it is not a L78 with aluminum heads, lol, think that is an L89! Not sure if there was L89’s in 67’ but for sure 68’/69’s. A L79 is high horsepower 327 cubic inch small block. Mostly Nova’s.

Had L89 in Corvette, and I have a pair of April '67 dated alum heads.  Running C/SS back then they had a solid lifter 396 motor planted in the car.
