Pinion yoke questions.

This site has been a wealth of information for me, but I have a question that I have not seen addressed. I have a '68 396 car I bought from the second owner in 1982. I am now doing a complete
restoration. When I disassembled the 12 bolt rearend, the pinion yoke did not have the dust shield on it. It also was a u-bolt style yoke. I purchased a new bolt and strap yoke which was referred to as a 1310, and :-[ it is close to 3/8" longer from the base of the collar to the bolt surface. Is this the correct item for this rearend? thanks for any help.

No, that's not right.  Should have the dust shield and u-bolts w/ 5/16 x 18" nuts.  Uses a 1/2" wrench for the nuts to remove the  u-joint.

For '69 Chevy started using stronger driveshaft components. The yoke can be used in a '68 but you will probably have to shorten the driveshaft. Don't know about other transmissions but the '69 Muncie 'shaft is just under an inch shorter than '67-'68.

Learning more and more about less and less...

Thanks Jerry. I think I just ordered the wrong part then. Almost everything on this car was as-is, but i guess someone must have had the yoke off at some point for the shield to be missing.

Have a 68 396 4 speed with u bolt design but also use to have a 396 400 turbo with original rear axle housing that  had strap design. Hope this helps!!

Where can you buy the strap type? I tried but had to settle for the u-bolt type. I was told the original type spread out a little over time and the the u-bolt type was stronger. I had to change it because the u-joint was too loose in the saddle.

Anyone know if any of the u joints he sells is like the originals?

Spicers are available without grease fittings and that's what you want.  No grease fittings in the joints.
