68 M21 question

  I was reading the info on the main page about 68 Camaro's and noticed that in 1968 the M21 close ratio trans was only listed as available in the Z28 302, and the SS396, is that correct? Or did I miss something?

Thats the only way it was available all three years.  Small block SS's could only get the M20, L34/L35s could get the M20 or M21, Z28's and L78/L89s could get M20, M21, M22.  (except in 67 when I think the L78 could only be had with an M21).  Nothing else got the Muncie 4 speeds of any kind, except COPO cars.  Muncies were even an option on SS's,  base SS's got a HD 3 speed if you didn't select a 4 speed. Z28's required a 4 speed, the rest got Saginaw 3 and 4 speeds if a manual transmission was selected.

A few details. L35 could only get a M20. L34 could get a M20 or M21.

M22's were not available in 67.   67 Z's and L78's only got M21's.

I was asking because I picked up a 68 that was sold to me as a Z/28. It seems to have everything correct for a Z/28 such as 4 leaf rear springs, 12 bolt with BU code, and an M21 with the VIN of the car on it. It is a definate project but is missing the 302 engine. It has been sitting a long time but is complete minus the engine, the date codes on the trans and rear are with in two to three weeks of the build date of the car. Now I just need the weather to warm up and plan a trip to go get it as it's a ways from me.
