What part of 1969 Camaro Console should be flocked?
« on: November 28, 2009, 11:10:14 PM »
Is the storage tray in the console supposed to be flocked? How about the seat belt cavity? Anything else? On TeamCamaro, someone claimed the underside of the storage tray lid should also be flocked. Is this true?

Thanks for your help.

My original one was flocked in the lid and the storage area that the lid went on.

Can you guys explain "flocked" to me please..
Do you mean it had a carpet inlay or something?

68Zproject,

Thanks for your help. As i said in my original post, someone on Team Camaro said the lid was flocked. (Perhaps that was you?) After reading your post here last night, I laid in bed wondering if that is right. It occurred to me as a tossed and turned that I had an original lid from my other '69 Z that I replaced a couple of  years ago. This moring I went hunting through my old parts ("never throw anything away!") and found the lid. Sure enough, it was flocked! If you hadn't posted here, I never would have even considered it. The lid has already been flocked and is drying. Thanks again. You saved me points at Nationals next year. What was the build date of your Z?

BlackoutSteve,

Flocking is a coating of felt on a surface. It looks and feels great to the touch. You can purchase a flocking kit from Eastwood that does a nice job. Basically, you paiint glue on the surface to be flocked, then sprinkle the flocking material onto the suface and let it dry. When dry, you vacuum off the loose flocking and are left with a flocked surface.

My untouched original '69 console compartment and the inside of the lid are flocked, and the seat belt buckle storage cavity is not.

I have a 68 Z28.  It has a console in it, but it wasn't original to the car (as far as I can tell), so it is coming out.

I have flocked the underside of the lid and it looks great. I do wonder, however, why it was flocked to begin with. Is this a sound deadening technique?

Yes, it's black - it was done to minimize rattles from stuff stored in the compartment.
